New (sorta) HUGE climbing gym in Barcelona
|
Just FYI (and I have no connection at all to this enterprise)... Chris Sharma has recently opened his new gym just outside Barcelona in Gavà. I just paid a visit and was seriously impressed--it rivals any big, modern gym I've seen in the States (three bouldering areas, 20+ autobelays, huge lead climbing area, maybe 15 pre-set TRs, inside and outside cafe/bar, kids area, etc.). Search around on YouTube and you can find a few videos if you want images. Bring a 50m rope minimum for leading as walls go up to 23m. A 10-punch costs 130 Euros. An employee will check you out and clear you for the autobelays, TRs, and lead climbing. There are several other reasonable gym options in Barcelona, but with this one, Sharma has defintely hit it out of the park (a baseball reference for my foreign friends). Someone said it is now the biggest climbing gym in Europe, but I can't confirm that boast. Of course, if you come all the way to Spain, you'll be wanting to get outside and not hang in a gym. But for that rainy day, if you are in town, it's an option that won't disappoint. |

The issue with large gyms is I never even have the endurance to enjoy them all the way in one day... |

looks amazing, hope to visit! |

The website claims 1400m² of walls so it's medium sized, the DAV Thalkirchen (Munich) is 7800m² and largest in the world. |
|
I guess I was awestruck because it is the first "real" and modern climbing gym in the region. Looks like I'll have to add DAV Thalkirchen in Munich to my "plastic bucket list"... along with Excaliber in the Netherlands... and the Lago di Luzzone dam in Switzerland... My one big beef with the new Sharma gym--no cracks! What's with that??? They have some unused wall space here and there, so maybe that's in the works. Topic title edited to reflect reality. ; ) |

The website says "5000m2 with all climbing modalities clearly differentiated by zones, bouldering, speed, sport climbing and children’s area" but it is not clear whether that is wall or floor area. |

I don’t know where it says just 19 sport routes. Just the relatively small autobelay area had 20-plus autobelays serving at least 30-35, maybe 40 routes. And there had to be well over 100 routes for lead climbing, and probably at least an equal number of boulder problems. I believe I read somewhere there were roughly 150 sport routes set for the opening??? Much smaller than Munich, obviously, but plenty to keep a person occupied no matter what grade you climb… and much, much bigger than Climbat La Foixarda which was (and still is) our other “big” gym. So for us, a HUGE step forward for fun times training on plastic. |

It looks to be a great gym, but more medium sized than mega sized when compared to DAV Thalkirchen, Kletterzentrum Innsbruck (though both of those include a lot of outdoor surface area, unlike say, Earth Treks Englewood, which has > 4000m² all indoors). But seriously, the mega gyms are all overkill: I'm not going to complain if one opens next to me, but I'm not going to commute a long distance either. |

Aha! I'm looking at a different Sharmaclimbing wall/website. |
