Im looking at pants to use for hiking and climbing, something durable enough to withstand a bit of bushes, Im looking at either the patagonia quandary pants or the RPS rock pants. Does anyone know which one is more durable? and comfortable? What are the differences between the two fabrics? (nylon/spandex in the quandary vs the nylon/polyester in the RPS rock)
My favorite were the original Bag Gi heavier nylon. Almost like ribbon. Arizona manzanita shrugged off. I could pull j-tree crystals out of it after sliding off a dome ledge. Never overheated in them, either. Wish I could find a stash.
Another thing about 90's Patagonia - the natural waist. I can't stand having the seat only 'half-cup' my butt. I want the belt or waist above my hip bones. That's how you can step high without pulling on the fabric at your knees. Skinny jeans fashion doesn't belong in activewear, but everyone is oblivious to what they don't know.
In my experience more stretch leads to faster fraying. I had 1st gen arcteryx soft shell pants and they really didn’t stretch. Very strong. All soft shell I’ve used since then has been weaker.
My guess is the RPS will stand up to abrasion better. But I’m still searching for something better.
Comfort: 8/10 - Nylon/Spandex blend. Not movement limiting, but somewhat of a snug fit. Soft, wicking, quick drying, and light.
Durability: 6/10 - The material tends to pill. Compared to the Prana Zions, they pill a great deal more. Haven't made any holes after a couple years while other pants (Zions, Bronsons, any cotton materials) tend to rip. These aren't Wrangler Jeans that can survive Rick & Morty, but they tend to outlast even some canvas materials.
Value: 10/10 - $27 dollars retail. Walmart sells them for even cheaper. Buy 4 for the price of a Zion and don't worry about getting them thrashed in the bush.
