Which guide service for Ouray backcountry ice?

I plan on making numerous visits to Ouray this ice season. I have climbed in the park with buddies and have all of my own gear. I set up the top ropes for us and have numerous years of rock climbing experience. This year I would like to hire a guide for some backcountry routes and also a lead seminar. Does anyone have a preference for a certain guide service? I have looked at San Juan mountain guides, Peak Mountain Guides, and Mobius Mountaineering. Any experience with these guide services? Thanks I’m advance.

I think you should just go for it, maybe back off a grade.

Old school, you know; being a climber

wandering around the Ouray area as a beginner ice climber who has only ever top roped is an excellent way to get avalanched and die, even if you manage to panic-sink a few screws on lead before the big slide

try to smile if you do this! I know some of the folks on the rescue squad and it's always nice when they can dig out a cheerful popsicle. even nicer for a lost tourist if you happen to melt out in the spring instead!

Skyward Mountaineering, which is Vince Anderson’s outfit. See if they are available. I’m sure all the guide companies are good, but I used Skyward and had a guide named Buster, who was awesome. That’s all I know

Thanks for all of the replies. I might start with SanJuan Mountain Guides and try one of the others if the vibe doesn’t seem to fit.

San Juan Mountain Guides for sure. I climbed with them for 3 straight backcountry ice days back in February. They are legit!!

I would throw another good word in for Micah and his service Splitter Alpine, great teacher and guide, and just a good a person to hang out with!

Peak Mountain Guides. Matt Wade, formerly with SJMG and currently AMGA deputy director, is the sort of guide who even gets recommended by his peers.

+1 for Skyward Mountaineering and Buster

I would suggest linking up with Clint from Mobius Mountaineering. I've heard nothing but good things about him and my exchanges with him regarding things outside the guiding realm have confirmed his rep as a great guy.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
