The Alpinist (Movie)

Just got a promotional email about the premier of the The Alpinist. Film looks great--I'd love to see it. But am I reading it right that there's no streaming option in the U.S.? I have to go sit in a crowded theater during a pandemic to see it? Seems...ill advised...

I have a young kid at home, and going to in-person movies just isn't something we're comfortable with yet. I'm pretty upset at Sender Films/Reel Rock for forcing people to sit in a theater right now. I would totally pay "full price" to stream it...

EDIT: Sorry for locking this earlier. This topic hits pretty close to home. But I'm gonna let people flame away.

Relax.   No one is forcing you to do anything.  Going to the theater is a choice and a privilege.  The movie isn’t as important to you, as trying not to get covid.  Cool. Wait to see it then.

They will release the film for download, like they always do, after the initial release and theater run.

Best of luck.  Have fun and be safe.

It’s irresponsible for a company to encourage a ton of people to gather in a theater for no reason. I don’t need lectures about free will.

Lmao, you want to watch a movie about the riskiest endeavor ever, alpinism.

But going to a theater is too risky for you? Found the boulderer!

Sorry I don't want to give my 2-year-old a deadly respiratory virus... I just don't understand why someone would attack me personally for starting a discussion about whether it's responsible for a company to only make their product available in a crowded theater...

I’m not attacking you.

Admittedly I could have done without the condescending “relax”.  At the beginning.

my point was to assure you that you’ll be able to watch the movie from the comfort of your own home.  Maybe you knew that, maybe you didn’t.

If you want to talk about whether it’s responsible for a company to release a film and attract a gathering in a theater, ok.

I stand by my statement.  You used the language “ forcing”.  Again, no one is forcing anyone.   Seeing a sender films movie in the theater is not a mandate.   It’s an option for anyone interested in the film.

I don’t want you or your two year old to get covid.  If you’re vaccinated and wear a mask in the theater then it’s very unlikely that will happen.   But if you weigh the risks vs the reward, and decide you don’t want to go to theater, that’s your choice.  It’s not on the film company.

Calling them irresponsible, is irresponsible.

Rock on man.

Personally I wouldn't go to see any movie in a theater right now either. Even though I have been vaccinated. That's my personal risk assessment, like everyone has to make.

Other people have either been vaccinated or have had and recovered from covid and feel safe in crowded spaces. Feel free to go see a movie and follow the theaters covid guidelines

I'm unsure where you've been personally attacked in previous comments by other users. It's all seemed pretty civil.

MP is all about startin' shit, innit?? <3

In the end, just like every film ever it will be available for download or streaming somewhere, eventually.

But you BETTER pay to see it! You better support his family and our passion somehow. It is the least you can do for Marc-Andre's unintentional Sacrifice. I wouldn't care about climbing if it weren't for Him and Ueli.

I agree it seems ill-advised for film companies to be releasing exclusively in theaters. It isn't forcing anyone to go but is certainly encouraging people to gather in a large group.

If it is any consolation, the Anthony Bourdain film was also initially just released in theaters but it only took 3-4 weeks for it to become available on streaming services. (By then my excitement about the film had waned and still haven't seen it. Makes this seem like it is also a bad business decision.)

The virtue signalling begins one hour after OP! Is that a mp.com speed record?

Hopefully, The Alpinist is more like Dawn Wall than stupid, suck-ass Valley Uprising.

Reach out to the Sender Films crew and ask when the film will be available for purchase/rent.  They have been pretty responsive in the past.

Let me know what you hear.  I do like watching these in theaters but I also end up buying the damn film anyways....  so not really economical.

I'm pretty sure that I saw somewhere that the movie will be added to Amazon Prime once the short theater premiere ends. Also, I really don't think this is the type of movie where you would walk into a packed theater. I would be surprised if I went to see this at a theater and I walk into more than 10 other people in the theater. Hell I'll probably have a hard enough time convincing my climber friends to go out and see it.

Shouldn't you be way more worried about yourself, since according to every research out there your 2 year old is at considerably less risk than almost any other age group? So either you're not listening to the scientists, or you're using your 2 year old for shock factor internet arguments.

Hey, daddies are special people. You get a pass.

It most likely was unfortunate, rather than intentional. Everything was opening up, looking good...back when they would have made these theater agreements. But now?

There are still plenty of places with lots of unvaccinated people. Delta has arrived, young people are now getting it, and it is grim.

Idaho is close to crisis care now, with ICU units full. Almost all covid, and unvaccinated. It is absolutely horrifying and heartwrenching for the providers. Some of those in the ICU are pregnant.

So no, as much as I want to, I can't justify going to a small enclosed space with tight seating and 140 people. I'm vaccinated, so I'm pretty confident I'd fly through easily even if I got the damn thing.

If you're unvaccinated still, and I somehow get this and transmit it to you? A rather angry part of me feels it serves you right if you end up in the ICU, since you helped get us here.

But ....

Infecting kids and moms?

Sigh. Okay. I'll wait for a download to watch this. I just hope Sender can recoup their losses.....

Best, Helen

You're out of date. Delta is putting the young at risk now. This is no longer an old people who are going to die anyway thing, crass as that is. Our schools reopened a couple weeks ago....and some are in outbreaks now. Elementary kids.

But yes, the OP is probably at more risk.

Best, Helen

Should be available to stream at least in Canada in Oct. Get a VPN and spoof that you're hanging out in Alberta and you should be able to watch it.

As everyone else has stated it will be available for streaming at some point soon.  My guess for the theatrical release is to make it qualify for certain industry awards that require it to be shown in theaters for a certain amount of time.  Winning some of these rewards pays off with a larger demand once it starts streaming.

I saw the Alpinist when it opened in Squamish last weekend. It's a great documentary and the stoke to see it is totally justified.

Interestingly, after watching I had the opportunity to chat about it with a prominent alpinist who was interviewed for the film. In his opinion, the film did Marc Andre justice in portraying him as a guy who wasn't looking for fame, and just wanted to climb on his own terms for its own sake.

His only minor critique was that the film could have done a better job in explaining just how far ahead of the curve Marc-Andre was in relation to most of his contemporaries. His solo linkups on Stanley Headwall, for example, were some truly next level shit. This is all mind blowing to me because I thought the film was quite intense. Think of the sweaty palms you got when watching Free Solo, and now imagine that but scratching away with ice tools and mono points on hard mixed routes...

Thanks so much! That makes sense. The teaser footage certainly was breathtakingly beautiful!

As OLH said, that's no longer true.

Another way of stating it: your statement is idiotic. Seriously, are you willing to risk the life of your kid via actions you can do to prevent it?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
