Missoula Area Climbing
|
Got a job offer in Missoula and wanted to find out more about the community and what kind of climbing is close by. I know about Rattler but was hoping there was information regarding places I could potentially hit after or before work that would be closer than Rattler. Looking for more sport climbing outdoors and I don't care for climbing in gyms. Thanks! |

Base Creek has about 8 routes 10 minutes up the trail. Big Creek takes a little longer. Up towards Lolo Pass - a couple of miles pass the Hot Springs there are a couple of areas just off the road. These are some of the areas I used. Glen Domes has some routes but you could put up some more (I showed Steve how to bolts - don't know how much he did before he moved). |

Get connected with the local community. It’s vibrant and full of terrific, friendly people. No better way to achieve your objective, imo. freestone climbing in town is a good start, as is joining the WMCC and going to one of their events. ( wmtcc.org/) |

Elk Meadows is another great after work spot, especially in the middle of summer. It can be 90 in town and 72 up on the rock. You say you dont care for gyms, but going there and meeting people will be the best way to find partners and other crags. |

Missoula area sure does have a lot of bushwhacking to find climbing. I guess that keeps the crowds away. Is Bass on private property? We were asked to leave. Mtn project says nothing about it. |

It does appear that there is a private inholding. |

Thanks Kurt! I guess I won't be going back there. We did check out Big Creek and really enjoyed it once we found it (seems we took 1 wrong turn). Thanks for the suggestion. |

https://www.mountainproject.com/area/106619842/blodgett-canyon Blodgett is like a little Yosemite Valley. It huge. Likely many more routes than posted here. All around W. Montana there is lots of rock. Most of it loose as hell, but still fun. |
