Any free camping near black mountain that will dependably have space and is not 100 degrees at night right now?

It will be my first time up there and it seems like most of the paid ones are reserved for 8/13 and 8/14 when I will be there otherwise I am open to paying.

6 Groupsites, along the road past the Boulder Basin campground, are free. Note: I do not mean the reservable, paid, signed Group Camp. Plenty of pullouts, too. Just watch out for the no-parking zones. I wouldn't sweat finding a place to camp. No fires allowed right now. In boulder basin, the even-numbered sites are FCFS, and it's not that crowded up there these days. The rooad's getting pretty rough lately, though...

If you do find free camping, I'd encourage you to pay for day-parking in the basin and support the areas you climb at with your use fees. Idyllwild is also a great town that depends on tourism. It ain't too far away. Worth it on the way out sunday morning.

Lastly, be aware there is 0 tolerance for open flame up there. Please respect that, and I hope you'll have a great, safe time.

Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it.

It's  all a matter of whose perspective you ask for...

What kind of paddle does one use with a douchecanoe?

None of this nonsense takes away from the fact that Black Mountain is in fact a very popular location that has obvious signs of overuse. Seems that when Dr Topo published black mountain, that was the beginning of the end.  Still, when I arrive at Black Mountain on say a beautiful Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, there is a chance I have the place to myself.

You don't need 4wd either. So, the road is not that bad.

Tony, you need a camp stove permit for the free sites that are past Boulder Basin and camping at pullouts is not allowed.

The FS is discussing shutting down the free "group" camping on Black and South Ridge in Idyllwild due to on going fire concerns. The right thing to do would be to get a pay FCFS site in Boulder Basin that also has parking, as day use parking is very limited and routinely abused by climbers.

Behind the scenes climbing is very on edge up in Black, please tread lightly and use only posted legal areas for camping.

Where did all the climbers go if they are not up at Black?

I know of some decent human beings living in the Los Angeles area.  I call some of them friend.

That said, the region is a blight on the planet.  I avoid it at all costs, having learned several lessons as a younger man.  The city tends to draw in residents that either don't mind or appreciate such a horrendous scene.  There is no real argument here, it's an irrefutable fact.

Not trying to argue with your irrefutable facts, but San Diego seems to attract its fair share of dingleberries too.
