Has anyone thought to use a petzl maestro or ASAP for top rope solo? The asap would be cool for lead solo but I'm worried the teeth would shred the sheath in a fall.

yes I’ve thought of it. ASAPs are meant to have a screamer used in conjunction for this reason.... but also they don’t engage until You reach a certain velocity like 3.2 m/s or something like that.  Not good for a menagerie of reasons.

Meastro however might have some potential if your not into the better, cheaper options.

Interesting. So technically you’d need a thicker rope to pair. No way to know if it would feed better than the grigri without buying one to play with. Nick are you using the grigri 2 or the grigri 3 when self belaying? I heard the 3 has the improved cam from the grigri +, so maybe the 3 feeds better than the 2? Just an idea.

One final thought - that rope redirect part - hoping it doesn’t have any jutting parts in case it would hit the climber when they fall.

The Asap is meant for static 11mm rope and will shred any dynamic rope. It's not a progress capture device but an emergency dont-hit-the-deck device.

the maestro is the size of a dinner plate and weighs a million pounds

the asap isn't for dynamic ropes, which is just one of a myriad of reasons it's the wrong tool

It’s a back up device for main line failures on a two rope system. I doubt in low angle situations it would even work.

Kong makes a toothless device that might be better suited as a back up.

Are you referring to the Kong "back-up"?

Sup Levi! I'm using the grigri 2

Thanks for the clarification!

Nick - maybe the grigri 3 feeds better? I’ve heard folks use the edelrid eddy. Have you met Mikey Shafer? He’s really good with lead rope solo - I’m pretty sure he just uses your grigri/microtrax setup but maybe he’s shared the finer points somewhere on a thread

Just checked out the ASAP - really cool device - might work for LRS but for the teeth. Looks like if anyone would make the best lead rope solo device it should be Petzl

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
