Swimming holes near the City?
|
We’re taking the kids to the City of Rocks next week, and it looks like it might be hot! Are there any good swimming holes near by to go cool off in after a day of climbing? |
|
Durfee hot springs has a nice pool |
|
On the list! Are any of the creeks still likely to be running this time of year? |
|
Durfee is 4-10, but only Thursday, Friday, Saturday. We were sliding on the rock where Center Creek runs over it by the Creekside trail, but my friend also kinda demolished her tailbone, so there's that. The creeks aren't really swimmable, but you certainly can wade and get wet, here and there. There's a lake back up toward Pomerelle, and Raft river may be accessible. I just hold out for the pool days, I love those pools! That's also a chance for your kids to play with other kids, too. If you are in natural water apart from springs, remind your kids not to drink it. Ice cream at Tracy's works for me. :-) EDIT to add, pretty sure Oakley has a swimming pool too. |

Had an altercation with the local town troublemaker while at those hot springs...not an experience i would recommend unless you know the local Almo cops. |

Fernando Cal wrote: It's a public swimming pool, in the metropolis of Almo, pop. 130ish, unincorporated. Dunno what you're trying to do here, what happened, or even if you're mixing up Almo and elsewhere, but there is ZERO inherent issue with going to Durfee hot springs. If you had a run in with someone there, it could happen anywhere else just as easily. Was either/both drunk? And which local "cops" do you know???!? The rangers (climbing rangers both, by the way), who spend hundreds of hours reminding people to leash their dogs? The wonderful park ladies who make sure the tp is refilled? The personable, well trained cow dogs? Heck, the beeves themselves take over pretty regularly, for that matter. I've met all of the two legged ones, and a fair number of the four legs too. And, uh, one for real actual member of the constabulary for Cassia county. Oops. Didn't notice the speed limit drop. That was still many miles from Almo, though. Never ever seen anyone remotely Sheriffish around the City or Almo. Or on any of the drives there and back, for that matter, once away from the freeway. Lol! H. |

Grug M wrote: Might be an instance of wrong place wrong time. After a day of climbing with my gf, my friend and his gf we went to the hotsprings to relax. Had pizza and then headed to the parking lot, changed into our swimming trunks and headed inside to pay the entrance fee. It was a nice evening and chatted with other climbers and non-climbers and the place slowly emptied out as it got darker. Then we heard some commotion in the parking lot but didnt pay attention as we were just chatting away in the pools. A few minutes after hearing the altercation in the parking lot, a dude came in to the pools asking/yelling “who’s the clown?” He eventually made his way to us and we ignored him but only seemed to make the dude even more upset. We didnt want trouble so we left to rinse off when the guy got up to my friend and started pushing him. He was obviously intoxicated as i could smell the alcohol 4 feet away from him. He was just looking for someone to fight with. I stepped in and the guy got aggressive and his gf and friend pulled him away as we were about to fight back. He eventually left with his buddies and peeled out of the parking lot. The people in the pools saw it all and wondered why he picked on us. We were puzzled and decided to leave. As we left, i saw a truck pull up behind us and followed us into the park. They were driving pretty close behind us. To play it safe, we skipped our campsite and decided to turn around by the parking lot rock and the truck followed us in. So now were worried. We couldnt make out the type of truck but we left and drove out towards the entrance towards BLM camping. The truck went the opposite direction towards town and sped away. After we no longer saw the trucks tail lights, we waited a bit and then went to our campground inside the park. Probably slept 1 hr that night listening and waiting for a truck to come back at night. Again, just one bad experience but one bad enough for me to convince me not to go back to those hot springs. |

W K wrote: Not a Twin Falls sheriff. That's the next county over, and no jurisdiction, unless there's some mutual assistance thing going on at the time. Wouldn't just be out patrolling BLM. Coulda been a BLM guy. Sorry about the pool incident, Fernando, but that sorta thing truly can happen anywhere. Idaho license plates generally have county designators. Boise is in Ada county, so my plate starts 1A. There's heaps of B plates, numbered in alphabetical order. A fair number of C, too. Cassia county, where Almo is, is 4C. So if it was 4C, it was local. If not....well, some other dude having a bad evening, with booze not helping at all, at all. Surprise, surprise. Almo is closer to the Utah and Nevada state lines than to anything official in Cassia county, unless you count the Almo post office in Tracy's! Anyway, anomolies are anomolies, but still... I doubt I will ever climb where I know a fatality happened at City, just before a trip there. Yet, I don't even remember which route the fatality locally happened on, and it was the first. Both were totally stupid, sad, things. One, gives me pause, the other doesn't. Go figure. H. |

Look, I dirtbag out of my Honda, now and then, so it's always in the back of my mind to be cautious, or at the very least cognizant, when I'm traveling alone. No reason to expect rainbows and unicorns just because you're camping, eh? But our little pea brains are selectively stoopud anyway, lol! Anyplace empty, after dark? Heck, even just remote, in broad daylight... Maybe not a great idea, maybe totally fine. Welcome to the world some of us have faced our whole lives. Sure doesn't stop me from doing stuff, including with random wackos from MP! ;-) |

Had a great time at durfee the one time I went there. Very relaxed, family friendly environment. |
|
Raft river is definitely not a swimming hole, just FYI |
|
Bizarre story. Are we talking about Durfee's Hot Springs in Almo? Normally it's just a casual family friendly place w no alcohol allowed. |

Independence lakes up above Albion. Talk to Rob in the visitor's center about it when you come. He's in there most days except for Thurs-Frid. Absolutely loves them. I thinks it's a 3 mile hike in to them (about 5-6 lakes total up there). Wouldn't be a post climbing session type of hing, but might make for a fun family rest day. |

Dave Bingham wrote: Yup durfee’s in almo. Like i said, i think it’s more of a wrong place wrong time kind of situation but still not something I would like to experience again. And yea, no alcohol allowed but the previous times i’ve been there i’ve seen my share of tailgating at the parking lot. Or nalgene bottles with alcohol but not my point. Im sure most people will have a good time there. I had before, until that one time... |

Just find an unused cattle trough. By mid afternoon the water is nice and warm. |
