Hoping to check out the climbing at Moss Island this Sunday and we'd like to drive out Saturday night and camp someplace close by to avoid driving in the morning. Can anyone recommend a close free camping spot?

That's hard to come by in NY outside the Adirondacks. The canal bike path info may be your best resource:

When I was bike touring, I had success with some warmshowers.org hosts. Might be hit/miss as climbers.

Which direction are you coming from?

Curiosity got the best of me; there are some DEC primitive campsites not too far from Little Falls:

Looks like there's a free camping site at Lock 15 Fort Plain, which is only 15 miles past Little Falls. We're coming from Buffalo, so that would totally work.

We stayed at the free campsite at Lock 15 in Fort Plain and for what it was, it was a worth it. It overlooks the Erie Canal and the Lock which is scenic, but it's right next to the thruway and there's an active railroad line across the canal so the road/train noise is considerable. I'd recommend it for the convenience factor, but don't expect a tranquil experience.
