What gauge vinyl laminated nylon is used for haul bags?
|
I’m looking to go diy haul bag, the choices go 10,12,14,16,18,20,30,40,60,80 gauge. My instinct is to go with 60 or 80 but I’m not trying to haul extra weight for fun. Does anyone have any insight on this? |

I really would reccomend you instead source a PU laminate instead of vinyl this performes far better and isn't as horribly toxic for the enviroment. |

It's very difficult to source, I have been able to find a source here and there over the years but never followed through with the project i'm also not in the US so any source i could offer wouldn't be very useful. You could always skip the laminate all together and instead just make it out of UHMWPE you would have to waterproof it your self but all part of the fun. Dont have access to textiles textbooks atm for PU properties but i'm sure a quick google you will find them. |

Extremtextil in Germany has TPU-coated fabric: https://www.extremtextil.de/en/nylon-tpu-coated-both-sides-650g-sqm-heatsealable.html And also a lighter version that's only coated on one side: https://www.extremtextil.de/en/nylon-tpu-coated-450g-sqm-heatsealable.html https://www.extremtextil.de/en/nylon-tpu-coated-450g-sqm-heatsealable-2nd-choice.html I also considered making my own haul bag, but welding the fabric seemed like a PITA so I bought a Metolius haul bag instead. |

From a recent instagram post from bigwalldeuce: @wallaceclimbing the best material for haulbags is the urethane (not pvc) 28 oz/yard or 32 oz/yd. currently only Runout Customs is using the best stuff. Metolius used to use it but went with a cheaper material a few years back, presumably when they took production offshore. BD bags were also originally the best double coated urethane, but apparently they also have cut costs on their bags. Seaman, Cooley or Uretek are the manufacturers of the good stuff, originally developed to be fuel containers for offsite military ops. |

I came across some fabric I think would make good lightweight haul bags. Serge Ferrari Satin 502. Basically a 16 oz reinforced pvc with a Polyvinylidene Fluoride varnish (Related to teflon, only lighter) on the outside. Lighter and very slippery. My sewists don't like using it for some projects as it slips under the presser foot. Would be a lot less work to drag over the rock. I have a few yards of it I could sell if needed. Or you might check out the local awning shops. |
