Was hearing a lot of rave reviews on the sterling velocity, so went to buy one and there was only the VR9. Wondering what people think about it, especially because it's significantly cheaper than the velocity. I do tend to care the most about how durable the rope is - I want it to last for as long as possible.
I have a 40m and a 60m version of this rope and really like it. it feels really good and feeds through a grigri really well. My 60m got a little fuzzy last year because of where we were climbing but besides that, they are both in great shape after more than a year of intense use.
From a buddy of mine who works for sterling, the vr 9.8 is just a velocity that only comes in those specific colors and is not dry treated. Killer deal, the cost savings comes from the ability to mass produce it.
After a quick conversation with a Sterling employee over the phone, they were able to tell me that if both ropes (assuming the features selected matched -- non-dry, non-dryXP, non-bicolor) then the difference in pricing would be purely left to a difference in manufacturing costs. The representative spoke of different materials and colors and that this can steer their pricing patterns in certain directions.
The ropes however, as long as the features align, according to the representative should be totally comparable as far as performance.
