Scrambling/Soloing the Flatirons - suggestions for a beginner
I recently moved to Boulder, and yesterday I scrambled up Freeway on the second Flatiron. I AM HOOKED - I NEED MORE OF THIS IN MY LIFE!! Happy Days! |
Get the "Best Flatiron Scrambles" book. Does what it says on the cover. Lots of maps and photos to help you find them. Amoeboid and Sunnyside Two are both fun, low risk scrambles. |
Keep doing Freeway - laps of it. Start downclimbing it. Also there's Dodge Block, which if you start on the Second Flatironette is almost a separate line. Get Simon's book, then Roach's, then the Haas guide. Many of the harder ones, I roped up once before I committed to soloing them - that can help. |

I'd be happy to get out with you Rick if you ever want a scrambling partner. My favorite is the third which isn't open until the summer. Would be happy to show you the way up the 1st and explore some new ones too. Trying to add to me circuits. 541 640 2219 |

Thanks guys, this is all great advice! |

Don't go up the First Flatiron on a weekend morning. |

https://www.mountainproject.com/route/105758545/angels-way Angel's Way is a good solo with similar difficulty to the Second... from NCAR it isn't too long of a hike (but not that close to Chautauqua.) When the bushes start growing in the spring, the descent becomes a bit more annoying. (Hard to beat the second with trail at the base and top!) |
Angel's Way is a great solo, but I think it's certainly a level up from Freeway, if but the fact that there is a downclimb. If you get sketched or in a bad position, chances that a few dozen people will pass you to lend help are nil. Maybe it's just because I took things so slowly (I'm a slow learner off the deck!), I'm a little mother hen about things, which I'll admit! Check out the downclimb off the back first - I do like to know how to get off the things I get on. |
Also, please note Angel's Way (Ridge 3) is closed for Raptor nesting from Feb 1 - July 31. |
True. An alternative, Stairway to Heaven (Ridge 1) is not affected by the closures. |
