Climbing guide in Gunks area recommendation
|
Climbing guide in Gunks area recommendation needed. I'm a travel agent. My client (from Russia) is an avid rock climber 5.11 category, wants to climb near NYC in March. One extensive day of climbing. I'm not sure weather would permit rock climbing mid-March. How bad it's usually there? In case it's climable I can choose whatever guide Google find for me, but would prefer a recommendation |

guessing that march as some great climbing days @ the Gunks but possibly its hit and miss with the weather???? |
|
Nick is right - mid march can be pretty rainy or dry. Just sort of depends. Top of my head alpine-logic.com comes to mind. Although I have never used a guide or know this guy personally, just the first one I thought of. |

Yes, very much hit or miss with the weather in March ( every month, really, but March in particular). I've had perfect days there in March and also heavy snow, though typical daily high temperatures will likely be in the 40s/low 50s. Can't help with guide recommendations. |

March is hit or miss as others have said. Can be great or awful with everything in between. Don't go to Google for guides; select from the list of individuals and services approved by the Mohonk Preserve (https://www.mohonkpreserve.org/visit/activities/climb.html, scroll down), and make sure whoever you speak with understands that you are representing a skilled experienced climber, not a beginner. |

Outfits registered / allowed to guide on Mohonk Preserve property are listed at: https://www.mohonkpreserve.org/visit/activities/climb.html Only Alpine Endeavors is allowed to guide on Mountain House (Skytop) property (https://www.mohonk.com/recreation/outdoor-adventures/) - looks like they don't start until April though. Probably not where he'd want to go. You could look up Peterskill for single pitch to see who is allowed to guide there. Also be aware of New York State restrictions on traveling during the pandemic. No idea what they could be by then but looks like travelers from Russia currently require 10 day quarantine or a test within 3 days prior to travel, 3 days of quarantine on arrival, then negative test on day 4. |

I've gotten the worst sunburn in my life on a warm March day in the Nears -- and also frozen my butt off on a ledge waiting for a partner to finish a pitch while we lost the sun and maybe 15 degrees in an hour on another day. I will also say that it would be sweet to climb at Skytop and follow the sun around if your client's pockets were deep enough to make that happen. I'd also add that every working guide I have met in the gunks has been pretty rad and someone I could learn a lot from and have a great day with. There are surely better personality fits than others but it is a really good crew of working individuals up there. |

From the Mohonk Preserve website: The Preserve does not offer instruction, but the guides and guide services below are registered with the Mohonk Preserve.

echoing that NY state has pretty strict guidelines regarding quarantining for out of state travel. The communities around the gunks are relatively small (though not remote) so please follow the guidelines to help keep us all safe. |
