You know, just the ya know right amount. Like not too much but like not like you don’t get enough but not so much that like you like get too much because like too much is just 2 much to deal with. Too much chalk is like too much where it’s like cake on TV and that’s too much but not enough isn’t like Cake on TV. Ya know?

Exactly 2oz.

No more, no less.

Every time you chalk up you gotta refill it to 2oz. That's why I always rack a chalk bucket and a scale when I'm projecting, won't count unless I got 2oz of chalk in my chalk bag at the anchors.

Full.  It should be overflowing.  You should not be able to get your hand inside a correctly filled chalk bag.

Just a light dusting of chalk on the fabric lining should be enough. Y'know the right amount when you put your hand in the bag and feel nothing but emptiness and disappointment. If your friends borrow your bag you want their reaction to be of sadness and mild disgust.

You’ll know if you put too much because your backside and the rock face will soon be stained with half the contents of your chalk bag.

I usually have twigs and pebbles with a light coating of chalk in mine.

There is no such thing as “too much chalk”.

I like to calculate days of supply on hand, ahem, well I guess that would be in-bag not on-hand. On hand chalk only lasts a little while. I had to factor in temperature, frequency of climbing, average dip amount, desperate dip amounts, number of desperate dips per climb, well the list of variables was rather extensive. It got so I have to use some embedded formulas in excel to even sort it out.

One day is occurred to me - I didn't really need much, if any chalk at all. I unclipped the bag and left it in the car. I'll still use it for the right occasion but for the most part I stopped using it. Its funny, you don't realize how much time you're wasting until you stop wasting it. Ever watch a person chalk up like 6 times before they do a move? My excel formula never could accommodate repeat courage dips and that unknown blew out my forecast.

That EXACTLY how my girlfriend manages her chalk bag, and that's exactly my underwhelming reaction when I forgot mine & try, pointlessly, to borrow hers.

Then at some point, I guess the lining runs out of chalk and she borrows a small handful from mine, probably intended to last for the next 6 months.

Just enough to get you through a couple days.  Too much and your chalk bag just gets heavy, and spills everywhere.  Too little and you’re trying to squeeze chalk out of the pebbles and twigs.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
