Does anyone have recommendations for good lodging during the winter around Keene / Keene Valley / Lake Placid area? I would prefer to support local motels / motor lodges, etc. but have no clue what stays open in the winter.

I'm also open to reliable Airbnb's or campgrounds to car camp if that's a thing. Basically just trying to avoid sleeping illegally on the side of the road or in a sketchy parking lot somewhere.

I searched the forums and didn't see any related topics. If it's been discussed before my apologies and please send me a link.

Thank you so much in advance as always. Stay safe everyone.

In Keene Valley, I like the Rooster Comb Inn (my preference), the Au Sable Inn (staff can be a bit flaky and the restaurant/bar can be noisy), and the Keene Valley Lodge. I have used the Keene Valley Hostel in the past, but it appears to be closed right now due to COVID-19. All leave you within a 5 minute walk of The Mountaineer and the Noonmark Diner.

Near Lake Placid, TMax-n-Topos Hostel is a go-to if you are in a hostel mood or the Cascade Inn (haven't stayed there in a couple of years, but it is cheap - bare bones rooms that needed updating). The Cascade X-C Ski Center is also an option - it has a hostel setup in the basement, but whenever I have stayed there I always ended up with my own room. Showing up with $50 cash late at night can sometimes score a room at some of the chain hotels in Lake Placid.

Adirondack Loj rents leantos (15 sec to 2 min from the car) for $25/night. Free showers and 24/7 bathroom is a few minutes walk in the other direction.

Brookside Motor Inn in Upper Jay provides cheap basic 1-2 bedroom suites with kitchen and living room. Very useful for cooking your own meals - the kitchen is outfitted with pots, plates, silverware, dish soap etc. Apparently ownership changed last year and it has gone from basic and "quaint" to possibly substandard - I heard this from friends who have stayed there often, have not stayed there since 2019.

The ADK Trail Inn is also in Upper Jay and has a variety of rooms with kitchenettes and is superior to Brookside. The owners were very welcoming and price was reasonable when we stayed there for winter weekends in 2018..

There are pullouts along Route 73 with free campsites, which is nice.

Canadian Alpine Club has a cabin/lodge in Keene, although not sure how Covid has impacted. Cheap, clean, outhouses, group bunk sleeping. Have used Vrbo in Keene a few times and Art Devlins in Lake Placid.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
