Carabiner Size Comparison
|
I’ve always been frustrated with shopping for carabiners online because it is difficult to understand their size from an online photo. I don’t have access to a good gear shop, so it’s pretty rare that I get to see anything other than BD & Petzl in person. To help with this, I think it’d be nice to have something with properly scaled images of carabiners, so you could compare ones that you know versus ones that you aren’t familiar with. The below image is what I’m envisioning. The idea is that the images can be crowdsourced and easily scaled to the correct size using a 25¢ quarter. I don’t really know what the final format of this would be, but I figured if I could get the images scaled correctly the rest can be sorted out later (ideally, you’d want something where you could select ones you’re familiar with and they would appear next to the one you’re curious about but that is beyond me). If you want to contribute to this, all you need to do is take a photo of your carabiner next to a quarter on a piece of white paper and add it to this thread with the name (and ideally info about whether it is current version or older one). I can then (crudely) cut it out in photoshop and scale it to the correct size and add to the master image. Sample image: |

We invented rulers a long time ago. Mine mostly use millimeters but some primitive peoples still use inches. |
