Rob Dizzle - Equating the need to educate noobs about the fragile nature of most sandstone areas, to the desire to keep a few, new crags under the radar (gatekeeping!) so they aren't stacked with crowds, is ridiculous. Stoney Point is one of the most urban crags anywhere and I can tell you from experience that many noobs are not aware that places like Stony Point need an ongoing effort to educate new users to the fragile nature of wet sandstone.

The crag that Kevin & Guyzo are speaking of is not an alternative to Stony Point. There is little to no bouldering there, just sport routes. Also, it is at least 70 miles from Stony Point so the visitation will always be far less.

If you have ever visited a climbing crag and found out to your disappointment that it was jammed with people and all the lines had parties on them and you had to wait to climb one of them, then perhaps you might understand why some crags are kept under the radar so the developers and their friends can enjoy some peace and quiet and climbing. When I visit a place like Malibu Creek State Park, where friends and I established many of the routes there, nowadays I cannot even get on some of my favorites due to the crowds there.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep the crag a secret. But choosing to flaunt your secret knowledge about it on a public climbing message board to flex is fucking lame.

Hey friends, just to confirm it rained in Chatsworth this morning. Give Stoney a chance and climb in the gym or on some dry rock. I hear Boulderdash SFV and Stronghold recently had some comps so there should some cool sets to try out if you want something relatively close. Thanks!

Agree…….

I live in Moorpark- 11 miles west from Stoney.

We had light drizzle, mostly heavy fog. It made the ground wet. These are tough conditions to figure out.
Use your best judgment, please.

Was raining @ stoney on my way back from work tonight. Still drizzling

Just a heads up, the north side is still absolutely soaked. It'll still be at least a few days before it dries out again.

I was gone for a week- it was raining and snowing in Yosemite.
Going to Stoney later today- “out front” should still be good I figure.
Thanks all

Time to bump this…. It’s been dry and hot at Stoney. More and more people are showing up to enjoy the place.
Have fun all

Russ - the conga line of dry toolers is at “Sudden Impact” and “Three Pigs”…. you really need to escape the desert paradise and visit your beloved Stoney- return to your beginning!

It rained at my home in Moorpark last night. (.001inch) Don’t know if Chatsworth got any.

Looks like close to nothing. Maybe a drizzle. I bet it would be dry by tomorrow.

5-4-23 It rained long and hard last night. The sun came out this morning to dry everything out. But please give it a few days.

Light rain last night at Stoney. Should probably dry out quick. But shouldn’t be climbed today.

Well more like “extra heavy fog” …. Stuff was damp for sure. There is a difference. Going out now- I will report if really wet (dirt test) tomorrow. The June Gloom is, thankfully, happening. Best time of the year.

River- it was very dry yesterday afternoon! The dirt was dusty.
Do you live in Chatsworth? For about 20 years I worked in Chatsworth, had a good view of Stoney from office window. It was ez to know how much rain fell.
Need to find someone with eyes on the scene.

I was sent some pictures and comments from others saying there was some light rain the night before and that it was pretty wet.  So I passed the info along to play it safe. But that makes sense. Thank you for double checking.

Yes it was very wet, on the streets, in the early AM as it usually is when we get the heavy “June Gloom”  but the fog and mist goes away quickly when the sun gets going and burns it off quickly. The stone isn’t soaked like it is when it rains steady. Thanks for the heads up on conditions my friend who lives in Chatsworth has been off gold mining the last few weeks.

See you there

Aug 10….2023 We had some rain earlier this morning…. Stoney Point is fine. I don’t think the drops hit the ground.

Aug 20 - Hurricane Hillary has hit!! It now raining hard! Please stay away from Stoney for a bit, let’s see how much and for how long this unusual weather stays around.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
