Wrist pain (both sides of wrist)

I've struggled with wrist pain in both wrists on the pinky side of my wrist for over a year -- it is especially bad with underclings, slopers, or weird angled holds -- but it has been manageable. This past weekend I must have overcompensated with my thumb because when I got off the climb, thumb movement really hurt in the area where the tendon in the wrist runs up to my left thumb. I was done climbing for the day, and while it was a little better the next day, I still couldn't do much without pain. Has anyone else experienced this and had any luck with recovery? I'm trying to see a PT sometime soon but with new COVID stay at home orders this has been difficult. Thanks so much!

COVID shouldn't make getting medical treatment more difficult. Especially with a PT or orthopedist who isn't treating COVID patients.  How is your stay-at-home order preventing medical treatment?  Good luck.

It's really hard to get a non-urgent appointment, especially if you're not an existing patient in the system you're trying to go to. I've spent many many hours on hold for the past few days unfortunately.

FYI - if you disclose where you are some climbers might give you references for PTs

Andrea,

I had regular pain on the pinky side of both wrists for a while, at certain points it was really painful and I assumed it was serious. I finally got it checked out and it was primarily due to a muscular imbalance, the flexor muscles in my forearms are much stronger than the extensor muscles. Since its all connected this caused pain in my elbows as well. The PT, who was specialized in climbing injuries, said this is a really common occurrence in climbers.

I started doing PT and it got better immediately. It flares up every now and then but gets better as soon as I start up the exercises again. My goal now is to get both sets of muscles strong so I don't get flare ups anymore.

My advice would be to see a PT as soon as possible, in most cases its something that can be treated quickly and easily. Also, watch out for slopers in the gym, they can be deadly for already fragile wrists.

Good luck!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
