How long until helmets are standard in bouldering?

Who wants to take bets? Not a serious thread so joke away and wager recklessly. For real though, this seems like the #1 thing the community could do to improve safety in bouldering.

No, the number one thing we could do for safety is establish anchors on all bouldering routes, wear harnesses, and top rope them. Can't get hurt if you don't hit the ground.

It's bouldering, so who cares?

That's what the beanies are for

So the #1 thing to improve safety in bouldering is to eliminate the sport of bouldering? Well played sir.

TBH I don't know why it isn't standard already.

Due to life circumstances I'm going to be bouldering by myself at Stone Fort a lot in December. I've just decided I'll wear a helmet and report back how it goes.

Roped climbers only sometimes wear helmets, so I dunno. My bet is on beanies.

Precisely until helmets are designed, optimized, and certified to protect you from a fall, and not just falling debris.

Finding a climbing helmet that is designed for side impact is hard enough. Good rear-impact protection is basically non-existent. Until that changes, I don't think the benefits (while still climbing ropeless) are compelling or decisive.

I don't see any particular reason to not wear a helmet whilst bouldering.

I bought my helmet (an Edelrid Salathe, which has side and rear impact protection) when I started bouldering outdoors; as I value my own life more than not looking like a gumby.

Does it really count as top rope if the anchor isn't above you?

Boulders don’t really count as people, so does it even matter?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
