Lightest weight full zip "hard" shell pants?

I am a softshell pant disciple.  My OR cirque's + the recent addition of some TNF lighter weight summit series softshell pants have been my go-to ice climbing/ski touring/mountaineering pants for years.

On some objectives, it's adviseable/prudent to bring some sort of shell pants for additional weather protection/warmth etc.  I'm looking for the lightest weight full or 3/4 zip "shell" pants that are available that are liked for climbing.  I currently have some Eddie Bauer Rainier storm shell pants that are about 16 oz and VERY baggy/billowy.  Goretex/waterproof membrane not required!  Water-resistant would do as I'm not using these as a rain pant more of high wind/it's pissing snow/ice sideways for hours and my softshells are starting to get wet pant.  Don't need to be terribly durable either as I can seriously count on one hand the times I have needed hard shells on over my base layer/softshell combo.  These will ride in my pack on cold/stormy days and be an emergency layer.

I know the lightest weight option are Houdini pants that Colin Haley lauds in some of his blogs. Without the ability to put over crampons it seems I would need to start and finish climbing in these pants. As someone who runs hot, the idea of being "stuck" in too warm of pants on summit day makes me shudder.

Wants: Trim, lightweight, somewhat breathable (I don't want a sweat suit), pack small, sidezips, stretch!

Pertex would probably fit the bill?

11 oz RAB pants

Something like this looks promising.  Forgot to add that some stretch would be nice as well...  I don't want garbage bag pants like marmot precips or some horrible rain pants.  Superlightweight climbing oriented hardish-shells :)

I can’t really help because all my hard shells have been huge, and loud and seemingly less packable than they should be. That’s why the shift to softshells, right?

I did just see OR Helium pants on sale for $36 on the OR site. They only have ankle zippers so probably won’t be 100% what you need. I don’t have them, but I have the jacket and I love it. Super light and packable and has an athletic cut to it.

I own these and I'm quite happy with them. Haven't used them for ice climbing but I have used them quite a bit on snowy rock scrambles and during glacier stuff. Work well with a harness and the fit is not super baggy with a bit of stretch. Only pain in the ass is no fly.

Mike I also love the helium jacket!  Without zips the pants won't work for my use case.

Victor, I found the rab pants on a whim.  The more I read the more it sounds like they are what I am looking for. The tabs to add a shock cord "gaiter" are key!!

Other than that the discontinued MH Quasar lite pants are all I could find.  Have tried on a medium and it was VERY small BITD.

in winter I use the haglofs LIM III pants. Super lightweight, super waterproof and full zips. I can recommend it.

Rab kinetic alpine or the zenith pant. The kinetic alpine is very stretchy and breathable. The zenith unzips and is light.

I use Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonics on my bike commute when it rains. Full separating zips, 10oz, short and long inseams available.

Seconded, they are also the most trim-fitting rain pants I have ever worn. I’m skinny and they fit well.

Has anyone tried the black diamond stormline pants? They look like a good option though there's not too many user reviews out there.

<10 oz, full zip, seam-taped, 2.5 layer laminate (BD.dry), $139

In-between budget options like the marmot pre-cip pants ($100) and luxe options like the arc beta sl ($300)

I was curious about those as well while researching.

I've used Marmot Precip pants for a long time.  Not particularly durable, but they are light, have the option of full size zips, and are good "just in case" rain pants.

If you really just want wind shells, Monbell Dynamo wind pant, and add a longer zipper. 2.8 oz, stretchy, windproof, breathable.

Othewise, I too have the MHW Ozonic.

If you want lighter, I can think of Enlightened Equipement Visp. Knee high zip. 4.1 oz. choose your waist/inseam sizing.

I have these and have been using them for a while I got the XL to go over my other pants. I"m 6' and 210. They are too baggy to wear without another layer underneath, and there is only a drawstring to tighten them. They pack into the back pocket. I've had great luck with them.

I just went though the same search and questions on here and ended up with the Mountain Hardwear Ozonics.

Full zip to put on with crampons or skis on, light, not baggy ( and I’m climber slim) and pack small.

Have not used yet but carried a few times!

Thanks Ian, that’s good info on the BDs.

Found a killer deal on the ozonics, but they aren’t close to my size unfortunately. Hope they fit someone here!  geartrade.com/item/682965/s…

Any more experience reports on the BD Stormline pants? Deciding on those and the Ozonics. There are reports of Ozonics tearing, but that might just be most UL shell pants and the BD's have fewer reviews.

I have 2 pairs of the future light full bibs from TNF. CRAZY light. Did great on Denali and still working for other ice climbing/mountaineering/skimo adventures. Pricey but have been pretty satisfied.

I was looking for the same so settled on OR's Apollo pants. 11 ounces, full side zips, 70D ripstop Ventia, and retails for a hundred bucks.

Also just realized this thread is a year old.
