See title...was planning on a car camping trip in a couple of weeks w/ some friends/winter camping noobs. I'm from PA and am not a local. Anything to know about the roads, gates/access, etc? The internet says approach from Inlet, NY and drive to/towards Otter Brook Rd and just find one of a hundred of so roadside sites. I doubt it's crowded in winter...right? I have a Land Cruiser with big horribly gas inefficient tires. Thanks.
The main road through the MRP gets locked at some point and stays locked through mud season. This is to protect the road from getting torn up by horribly big tires when softened by snowmelt and to preserve conditions for snowmobiling. This area of the Adirondacks gets a lot of snow and is a big snowmobiling area. Tons of info on the DEC website: https://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/53596.html
There are a number of designated primitive sites along route 8 west of Baker's Mills which you can certainly access. These sites are popular with hunters but you should have no problem finding one open when hunting season is done (mid-December) and it is too cold for most people to enjoy camping. (However, I have not been in NY for over 2 years and am not sure if the recent surge in outdoor activities has changed this.) THIS MAP shows the approximate location of some of the campsites. Look for the little yellow "Camp Here" discs.
There are also campsites along route 30 on Indian Lake. These sites are part of the Indian Lake Islands campground but when the campground is closed are first-come, first served. These are nice because they all have privies. Great ice fishing on Indian Lake so depending on when you go some of these sites might be taken by fisherpeople. Being on the east side of a lake, these sites will be rather unpleasant if it is windy.
Also some primitive sites on Thirteenth Lake.
Heart Lake Campground in the High Peaks is open year-round and you can reserve a site or lean-to.
I'm not familiar with entering that area from the West, but the Cedar River Flow area is easy to get to from the village of Indian Lake (take Cedar River Rd, duh), and there's a proper (free) camping spot at the flow AKA lake. As a bonus you get to eyeball the couple of rock climbing spots along the road on your way in to the flow. Beyone there roads penetrate into the MP area, but I haven't gone far enough to offer any info.
