I'm in the market for a down jacket and I've been looking at Eddie Bauer's Evertherm jacket. I'm drawn to the durability advantages of not having baffles or whole feathers, and it's on sale right now. It's given the same temperature rating (-20f) as Eddie Bauer's high end 800 fill regular puffy jacket; however I'm skeptical about that since they say the evertherm jacket is filled with only 30g of insulation as opposed to 5oz for their regular down puffy. Does anyone have any experience with this jacket? Is it really as warm as a good down puffy?
I had one and returned it. I didn't use it outside so can't really comment on warmth. It packs down incredibly small; if their temp ratings are accurate, it would be an impressive piece of outerwear. Wearing it around the house, it seemed pretty warm relative to its bulk, but that's not a real test.
What killed it for me was the fit. The body was OK, but the sleeves were massive. I could have carried several grapefruits in each sleeve while wearing the jacket.
I see that EB has released a 2.0 version - if they fixed the fit, I would definitely be willing to give it a shot.
I have one. I like it, but it isn’t nearly as warm as I was led to believe. Minus 15 my ass. I don’t think it’s much warmer than my 15 year old synthetic fill EB jacket, although it is lighter and wind/water resistant. Their temp ratings are for during moderate activity, whatever that means. I have no idea if other manufacturers do the same thing. With down, you go by fill power. IDK if that isn’t an accurate way to compare against a traditional down puffer because of the lack of quilting so they just say it has 30g of down.
I’ve been dragging it around since June. Took it up a couple of 14ers and worn it on some approaches and stuffed it in my pack a bunch. It’s holding up just fine.
Anyway I got mine for about $50. Look for it to hit clearance, then get a discount code. Sign up for their emails.
