BASE jump accident on Little Eiger?

I think I just saw a base jump accident on the Little Eiger in Clear Creek Canyon. Basically driving under the cliff as it happened. Ugh.

Rescue vehicles already heading up as I reached Golden.

I saw a lot of rescue vehicles this evening as well - local news said a hang glider crashed into a cliff. Hope they have a good recovery. https://denver.cbslocal.com/2020/11/06/highway-6-closed-rescue-hang-glider-crash/

The story you linked has been updated now to state that he was a BASE jumper.  Man, that sport is super dangerous...

Agree - but it doesn’t exactly sound like “stacking the odds in your favor” to be jumping off short, low angle formations.

Yeah, especially jumping off a cliff with an apron of low angle choss. Though getting his chute caught by it probably saved his life.

I may have some more details but it sounds like an epic rescue

One of the rescue crew sent me a link to this video which gives a good sense of where the jumper landed and how complex the rescue set up must have been, especially in the dark.

A puzzler to me is where a BASE jumper would want to land from there given the tight and steep topography of the canyon. Just seems like a bad place to be with a parachute

Interesting exit choice for sure! I’ve never been to the top of Little Eiger but it doesn’t seem steep. I’ve jumped another wall further up canyon but that has a nice overhang and landing area. It gets done often.

I watched three guys jump off the eiger like a month or so ago and they landed in the big dirt pull off. they basically jumped from the top of “too!”, cleared that big ledge and cut hard right toward the pull off. I can try to upload a video i took of it later. Really amazed this guy survived. Incredible rescue too

Hasn't this happened at the Little Eiger before?

I think a person i know had an accident jumping off mission wall.  Little eiger is less steep. Both seem like they have tight landing zones.
