Materials in climbing gear cable

Has anyone dug into the specific types of steel cable (or for more accurate terminology, the steel wire rope) that gets used on things like nuts and cam stems, and the materials used for the swages/end terminations?

I was looking to start making my own swaged loop doodads for aid gear like beaks, hooks, rivet hangers, and copperheads and am curious about what kind of metals/combinations most climbing gear companies use.

Sam, I have a shitty swadger, but good enough for adding clip in loops to things, that you can try out (I see you are local...).
PM if you are interested.
