Ticks Can Now Be Private

There is a new setting in your account that lets you make your ticks private so only you can see them. This involves a few changes:

  • If you make your ticks private: on your personal page, ticks (and the breakdown and map) will be visible to you, but not to others who view your page.
  • On route details pages, private ticks are grouped together and only the date is shown (your name and notes are not shown).
    • Also on that page, ticks are now grouped together by user.
  • Your tick notes can now be much longer - up to 2,000 characters. The old limit was 100 characters.

I had a rough weekend at Trout Creek, so this is just in time.

One quick suggestion, you should make it so that it only shows the latest tick by each user on the route details page with a + or a clickable quantity next to it to expand if you want to, that would make it way cleaner.

When looking at the route details page, I think it would be a good idea to have an option to sort according to date. This would revert back to the old-style view. Occasionally it's helpful to see the tick list in chronological order.

These new features are really great, thank you so much Nick! I feel much more comfortable logging falls and laps now that they are aggregated.

This is YUGE! Thanks Nick!

Grouping ticks is a VERY NICE improvement!  Especially when someone ticks all 12 goes as separate ticks and just fills the entire tick list.

The one downside I noticed to the changes is that the CSS for the rating group causes some ratings to wrap around now: 5.13a becomes 5.13 with "a" on the next line?!  Widening the browser window doesn't help... I'm sure this will get fixed soon.

Thanks team!

IMHO it's somewhat odd to have the option be all-or-none.  I would have expected to be able to check individual ticks as private/public.  But, it's progress, especially the increased word limit!

I thought about that, and other in-between settings and decided to KISS it for now.  I'd like to see how popular this is first.

LOL now everyone can see my years worth of flailing on a route every time i update with a new attempt.  But good job, much improved :)

Any example what the private ticks look like?

You can toggle your own account back and forth to see.  Just log out (or use a different browser where you're not logged in) and look at your own page.

Turns out you don't need to log out. Didn't think my own ticks would show up as private when looking at a route. Anyway, now I know what it looks like :)

The grouping is interesting. Kinda messes up the chronological order, wish there was an option to toggle grouping on/off.

Also shows some fun stuff:

  • someone doing Solar Slab 23 times in less than 5 years.
  • Doug Edwards PC or phone messing up and logging the same climb a ton of times, ie: ( mountainproject.com/route/s… )
  • People working for speed on The Yellow Spur, long lists on The Naked Edge, the first flatiron, etc...

Nick,

The private ticks are nice for those that want them, but imo that doesn't really solve any of the issues around ticks.  There should be 3 exclusive categories that are tracked separately for users to log routes.  Sends, Attempts, and Repeats. I would like to be able to track these categories separately.  I currently only use ticks to denote sends, since I care more about tracking that than attempts and repeats.  Since I do not use ticks to tracks attempts or repeats the MP metrics of Pitches and Days Out do not truly track my actual climbing.

Thoughts on if this is in the future?

The grouping is great, really highlights how my excuses for punting on the same route changes over the years.

You can currently track attempts with the tick feature as it is, you just select lead, fell/hung, but I agree that it would be nice to be able to track repeats as well.

I think you missed the point.  I want to track attempts separately from sends under the current tick system it lumps sends and attempts together.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
