Scarpa Phantom Tech v Arc'teryx Acrux AR
|
Trying to decide between Phantom Techs or Acrux AR. Basically the same price, and seem fairly comparable. Acrux is a double boot which seems to be the main difference. I am looking for new boots because I have been climbing in Mammut Nordwand 2.1 and I wanted a smaller lighter boot (single) but I have seen Acrux' before and they are light/small enough that it seems almost like a single? Thoughts for either boot? I feel like it may come down to which fits me better, but neither are in stock anywhere near by so would love to have one slightly above the other before I start just ordering sizes to try them on. Thanks! |

Although the Acrux is a double boot, I would lump it into the same category as single boots you are referring since I don't think it stacks up to other double boots on the market. I have owned both the Phantom Techs (both previous and current generation) and the Acrux. Depending on your goals and objectives it might be nice to have a removable liner to dry out the boots for multi day trips. In the end it's going to come down to fit as I did find they fit differently. The Acrux didn't work for my flat feet. I always ended up with raw feet and blisters regardless of the various sock combinations I tried. I always branch out to various brands for shoes and boots but always come back to Scarpa as their fit generally works well for me. |

Fit is personal so you have to try both but as far as proven durability and performance goes I would 100% go with the Phantom Tech. |

You can do what I did, which is a pain in the ass, but it works: order both, or if you don’t want to part with all the cash at once, just order and return one at a time. It’s very time consuming...but if you don’t have a shop nearby, it is what it is. I don’t know how the nordwand 2.1 fits, but I have tried the nordwand knit high. I have owned the phantom tech, and have tried the acrux. From widest to narrowest, I found: mammut knit, phantom tech, acrux ar, in that order. But ymmv. Also, for a really light boot, I saw plenty of people rocking the mammut nordwand knit mid, or whatever it’s called. It’s just a shorter version of that boot. It is a sweet boot, and I only mention it because you are already familiar with the mammut 2.1 and just want something lighter. I ultimately settled on Nepal Cube. The least sexy and heaviest of all those, but it ended up fitting best, after a sever break in trial. Good luck |
