We were at Shuteye when the fire really started blowing up. This is a photo of an early smoke plume from the Big Sleep area. We had to leave. Seems like it’s moving really fast - the fire has already jumped the San Joaquin river. Hope that everyone gets out of there ok today and that the fire doesn’t make its way to Shuteye! Winds are blowing the smoke north to Yosemite, so expect bad air quality in the Sierra this weekend. |

I heard via word of mouth just now that shuteye is burning. Seriously best to account for those you know who may be there.

The winds are blowing the smoke much farther north than Yosemite. We went from pretty clear skies at 9,000 feet near Sonora Pass to 100% smoke coverage and as dark as a very cloudy day. In two hours time. Luckily for us it's all fairly high so far. Down where we breathe it's not bad at all. We've got ashes falling all over the driveway though. Zero to 5,000 acres in one day? Yikes. |
|
From Bishop, we could see the pyrocumulus behind Mt Tom a few hours ago, now a big plume of smoke moving across. Reported to be getting smokey in Lee Vining. |
|
The fire is now 36,000 acres. Not good news for Shuteye. There were still a lot of people up there when we decided to leave. |

Cory B wrote: This fire is a horrible on many levels but it is not the first fire Shuteye has seen and won’t be the last. Shuteye has seen many many fires over the centuries. Shuteye will recover faster than you think. There may be some spaulding to the rock close to the ground that needs to be cleaned up after the fire but it’s pretty amazing how fast things start to grow back. Fire is as natural a part of the landscape as landslides and floods. It’s only bad because we are affected by it. |
