Podcast About the Geology of Rock Climbing Spots
|
Hello Everyone. I just started a podcast called The Rock Behind the Climbing where I talk about the different geologic aspects of different rock climbing spots! I am pretty passionate about both rock climbing and geology and found that this would be a fun way to share that passion with the world. Also, a lot of my friends and people that I meet are not so keen on the actual aspects of the rock that they climb on so I thought it might be really interesting for a lot of rock climbing folks. So far I have released two episodes, both detailing spots in the Bay Area, but I plan to branch out more as I move forward with this project. Anyway, I would love to know what you guys think, so if you have some time give one or both of the episodes a listen and let me know what you think! Various links for where you can find the podcast are below, but please let me know if there is a website or app that you think the podcast should appear on but does not. Cheers! https://tunein.com/podcasts/Sports--Recreation-Podcasts/The-Rock-Behind-the-Climbing-p1359752/ https://soundcloud.com/quinn-todzo https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-rock-behind-the-climbing It is also on Apple Podcasts if you type in "The Rock Behind the Climbing" |

Arm chair geology nerd here. Interesting content. I’ll likely keep listening. Thanks for sharing. |

Outstanding and long overdue!! I will absolutely listen to and promote this. |

Thanks so much everyone! I really appreciate it! By the way I just put it on Spotify as well, so you can also find it there at the following link |

I dig it. |

Listened on spotify, huge potential for this prodcast! My only feedback would be it mihht be worth editing our ums and ahs and having a set script, listening to more established podcasts you can hear the difderence but that will come! Congrats on that awesome idea, love it |

I enjoyed listening to the first episode. I appreciate the amount of work that you're putting into each episode - the background research plus the commitment to climb at each area translates to a big time commitment. You could likely get some academic geologists or grad students with local expertise to join you for some of the episodes. Hopefully your Montucky sponsorship will materialize. |

Hey! Matt from Reddit over here. I just listened to the Goat Rock episode. It was awesome! I had no idea about the terrace bit and I grew up in Sonoma County. Looking forward to listening more. |

An episode on “rotten” rock would be nice. I always wonder when I am trundling is the rock underneath the bad rock actually any better? |
|
An episode on the flood basalts of the PNW and the ice age floods would be awesome! |
|
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll add them to the list! Man I am going to have some road tripping to do this fall when the ash begins to clear |

I've been interested in learned about geology for several years due to climbing and have tried to learn about it, even buying several books, but I have found the information rather inaccessible even though my books were supposedly written for ignorant amateurs. I am really excited for this podcast and I will eagerly listen to every episode! Also, I am really excited to see the first episode is about Caste Rock State Park which for several years was my home crag! Not only is the place I've climbed at the most, it's an incredibly interesting and beautiful area. I'm going to listen to it immediately! If you start a patreon I will donate to it. Might be able to convince some friends to do so as well. Regardless of that though I am super excited about this and wish you the best of luck. I hope you can teach us about geology for years to come! P.s. if you want some episode ideas: Wtf is gneiss Wtf is schist Wtf is Pinnacles Why does sandstone not crack much except for rare places like the creek where it does Would it be possible to help us understand how to at least generally identify rock? Ie if I can say this isn't granite or limestone or sandstone or basalt or volcanic, would it be possible to educate us on how to at least have a vague idea of what we're looking at or would that require quite a lot of education? Because if you could help me understand that I would be forever grateful to you. |

this podcast is the schist! |

Ricky Harline wrote: Wow I'm glad you're so excited and thanks for your recommendations. I think the rock identifying questions will be answered as different rock types come up at the different locations profiled. It is no secret though that there is so much more that affects the features at a crag other than rock type alone, so important to look at the whole story when you are trying to understand what you are looking at. Anyway let me know what you think once you've listened to it! |
