DIY Wag Bags?
|
Have any of you done anything clever while making a DIY wag bag? Is this a terrible idea? I don't care to pay a premium for purpose-made wag bags, and so I'd rather make my own. I'm thinking of just taking two ziplocs, at least one with a zipper closure, and maybe adding some kitty litter to the inner bag to soak up moisture/odor. Let me know experiences with this, good or shitty. |
|
That is exactly what we did for a big wall, just two ziplocs and powder detergent. |
|
I gust grab two dog poop bags from those stations that they have in parks. Once its full I keep it outside my pack. Its not glamourous, but it works just fine. |

If you're going to hang the bag on a catch line below the haul bags then a dry bag wrapped in duct tape works well. (If you're going to keep it in the haul bag then usually best to just bail before the start, lol) |

good lord, wag bags are like $0.50 to $1.00 each if you look hard enough. not like that is going to break the bank or anything. |

1 gallon Ziploc + large garbage bag (w/ drawstring) + kitty litter in garbage bag + toilet paper = wag bag. if you buy the supplies from Costco your probably at less then 25 cents per kit, with the rough quality of the 2-3 dollar bags. It helps to wrap a small rubber band around it to compress it in your bag before use. Buy quality ziplocks or use two if you are worried. I have not bought premade kits for years, I bring them climbing, hiking, bouldering, esp during covid. |

(this is less than the cost of that damned cup of coffee that started the problem in the first place! :) ) |

I use compostable trash bags and am currently working with a friend to figure out a puncture proof, reusable outer out of X-Pac. I personally feel bad about all the extra waste that buying wag bags generates, which is why I've been looking for a more environmentally friendly option. |

i would be afraid a compostable bag would be 90% composted when i went to use it, and the remaining 10% of the composting process would happen in my pack on the hike out :) |
|
Hahah, no... 2x compostable bags in an old stuff sack. This method worked great after 3 days in the Wind River range and 10 mile hike out. I encountered so much human shit while I was out there that I was thankful to have brought a means to leave no trace. Packing it out may not be necessary in some areas, but heavily trafficked alpine areas need more people to care about LNT. |

What you want to do is buy bulk sodium polyacrylate ( a superabsorbent polymer), some Smell resistant ziploc bags and some small trash bags (I"m guessing about 4 gal should be perfect - they should be oversized. The absorbent goes mostly in the trash bag with a little in the ziploc just in case. Looks to me like you could make about 100 for around 30 bucks if you shopped around a little better than I did. |

2 grocery bags inside a big thick trail mix/dog treat bag does ok. The food grade plastic keeps the smell under control. The high rollers i know stick it in a washed peanut butter jar for worry free packing. |
