LS Cobra Sizing?

Any thoughts on sizing these for someone in North America that can't try them on? I'm looking for a mostly bouldering fit but comfort for the gym. I've looked around the web (you think there would be more info for such a old shoe) and I'm confused because:

  • BananaFingers size calculator says to size up from other Sportiva style slippers (e.g. Maverink/Skwama)
  • EpicTV says to size down from these
  • And no matter what shoe I plug in to SizeSquirrel that I'm familiar with, it gives me a range of sizes

I know people go for ~3 sizes down (which is what I went in Maverinks) because they stretch a lot, but I'm a bit worried they'll end up too small and people say they're quite narrow in the toes.

I used to wear a few Sportivas in a size 36 (Katana & Genius). I wore Women's Miuras in a size 35 at one point, and considered getting the Cobras in the same size. I do not wear my street shoes big and I'm about a 39-39.5. Considering the stretch of the leather for the cobras, I'd say go at least 3 sizes down, if not more. The simplicity of the shoe (aka lack of stitching and rubber) will allow for more stretch. My guess (based on moccs) is about a size of stretch. Ideally you'll maximize the tensioning of the shoe and compensate for stretch if you get them tight.

Yep, Sportiva definitely has a more pointed toe box more often then not. With that said I have found the shoes not to be particularly narrow overall, just more pointed at the toe.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Alek, helpful! The dilemma is whether to go down or add half a size for gym/comfort/warmup. Ah the fun of sizing slippers, always a trade off between snugness and worrying of heel looseness.

I wear the cobra .5 size down from most other LS models. I'm at 39 in the solution, miura, TC, etc. And 38.5 in the cobra. (42.5/43 sneakers.) I wore the cobra in 39 for a few pairs, and they were good, but I think they perform better in the tighter size and the comfort difference is not meaningful to me.

Cobras are the only sportiva I own (others fit me weird).  I went -1 compared to what I would buy for a street shoe or all day comfort climbing shoe.  I have a 44, buy way of comparison I have Scarpa Maestros in a 45 that I can wear all day with a thin sock.   At 44, the Cobras are either "good uncomfortable" or painful depending on how swollen my feet are.

These are great shoes but wouldn't be my first choice for bouldering.  To be fair, I don't boulder much.

Also bought them on sale from EpicTV)

I'm relatively new climber (1 year). Not a fan of super tight shoes. Street shoe size - 10½. My 5.10 Verdon are also 10½.

I downsized one full size in Cobra to 42½ and they fit great after 3-5 climbing sessions.

For me they are too soft and flexible, I can't use them for a top rope climbing, my feet get really tired. But they are great for bouldering

The responses in this thread show how different people size these. I pulled the trigger and got my pair of Eco Cobras and put one session on them (so these are really first impressions), but might be helpful for someone (maybe obsessively like me) searching old threads for shoe sizing. Happy to update after break-in.

My foot is a true 43 EU on Brannock, I'm part of the wide forefoot narrow heel gang with a normal to high arch, but I would call my foot medium overall before calling it wide. I ended up going 40.5 Cobras with the rationale that if I most Sportiva fit around 2 EU down, then 2.5 would hit somewhere between comfort/snugness. I tired Maverinks in store and never bought them because I wasn't sold on them. For Maverinks, 40EU (-3EU) felt right, whereas 39.5 (-3.5 EU) was the smallest size I could work with, but would've had more strenuous break-in.

Cobras are super forgiving out of the box. As I thought though, the toebox is a bit narrow for me out of the box. On both feet my highest pinky knuckles (widest part of the foot) press hard (in addition to a small pressure point on one of my pinky toes on my right foot). The heel is also surprisingly deep and digs into my outer ankle bones (similar to the Skwama heel for me), which causes a small gap. I suspect the heel problem would be alleviated by sizing further down, but I wasn't in the mood for a rough break in and further down would've been rough on the forefoot/toes. I suspect all these problems will go away for me though.

Not sure if that's actually helpful, just wish I had better local shoe availability!

edit for anyone searching in the future: Now after break-in via many sessions, my ankles/outer foot no longer get cut but press quite hard. Although the forefoot "sucks" to my foot, it is too narrow and my toes/knuckles hurt quite a bit. There's some dead space in the lower outer part of the shoe which causes some air to flood out during heel hooks, but I've never had it pop yet. It only makes an already insecure slipper heel feel slightly more insecure. I could size up in these, but it would just hinder the performance. I think they just don't fit my foot shape, which is a bummer because they check a bunch of boxes for me and the eco rubber is actually quite sticky. Beware of these wide forefoot gang!!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
