Recommendation: Scarpa Phantom Tech Sizing
Hi, I am looking for sizing for this boot vs Scarpa Climbing Shoes or Sportiva boots. Thanks! |
I wear the same size in both the Tech and their rock shoes. That should at least get you started if you don’t have a place to try them on. If you are doing the online thing, find a retailer you can order 2 pairs from and return the one that didn’t fit. I would recommend ordering what you think is your size, and then the 1/2 size bigger for the Techs. |

Not to muddy the waters, but I wear a 45 in nearly ever SCARPA rock shoe model, and a 46 in the last 2 generations of the Phantom Tech. I used a 45.5 in the original Phantom Guide. For reference, I have a fairly wide foot and relatively small heel. I'm lucky enough to be able to try on all the sizes and actually climb in them, and wavered between a 45.5 and 46 for a long time. A quality foot bed ended up taking some space and the 46/footbed is absolutely perfect now. As Jon mentioned above, get multiple sizes to try... |
I wear a size 10.5 street and running shoe, 43.5 TC Pro (all day fit), 43.5 Katana Lace (single pitch fit but not mega aggressive), 45 Vapor Lace (all day fit), 10.5 Anasazi VCS, and I wear a size 44 Phantom Tech (2018 version of the boot). Sizesquirrel.com does have a few Phantom Tech users to look through too. |

Ross, what size boot are you looking at? I've got a size 42.5 in both the current version (higher volume) and previous version (lower volume) that you could try on for reference. I haven't worn La Sportiva boots in a while, but I was also a 42.5 in the Batura and Trango S Evo boots. Also a 42.5 in Lowa boots for that matter. I'm a pretty standard 9.5 street shoe size. |
Thank you all so much! I am thinking around 41.5, but maybe 42 given what I have been hearing. Robert, that would be great!! I should be free next week. |
Hey, Ross! I'm looking for Scarpa phantom techs or guides in the same size as you. I have been looking online for 41.5's but it looks like the general consensus is to go up a half-size. Let me know how the sizing works out for you! |
I don't understand who these people are wearing the same size climbing shoe as a mountaineering boot, I'm a 44.5 in my phantom techs, a 40 in tc pro's (all day comfort) and generally wear a 43 street shoe. |
Just to confuse things - I wear 43 in sportiva boots and 42.5 in the latest phantom techs (which are supposed to be lower volume). I tried the 43 in the scarpa and there was too much room. I guess the consensus is: Try first! |
I ended up ordering a 43. So who knows... Robert letting me try some on was key. I think a 42.5 would have worked, but I wanted some bigger sock and foot swell potential. |
Thanks, Ross! Good thing I didn’t waste my time buying the 41.5’s that are 50% off on backcountry right now. It looks like the new model is going for $400 on Backpacking-United. They’re out of Germany so you’d probably pay a lot for shipping via DHL. There’s threads here on MP that talk about people’s experiences buying from them. |
Ross, for reference can you post up what your street shoe and climbing shoe sizes are? |
Ross, seconding a report of the fit. I'm 43 street and have worn 43 Sportiva boots for most of the past decade. Your observations will inform my upcoming purchase of the PT. Thanks |
Size 40 TC pro, multipitch fit. Size 42 in LS Nepal Evo & first gen Scarpa Phantom Tech. Size 41 street shoe. |
Size 42 street, size 39 Sportiva futura (tight fit), size 9 BD aspect (comfy fit) |

Hi,I am from Asia, thinking to buy phantom tech(2019) online for climbing Fuji mt this December and future snow mountain trip. I'm worried about buying the wrong size and my toes will keep hitting the shoes and bruise when going downhill. My foot length is 28cm, sneaker size is US10.5, backpacking boots size is UK11=EU46 =US11.5=foot 30cm (Millet Bouthan GTX). This is my first time to buy mountaineering boots, could anyone give me some suggestions? Thank you |
