Looking for some recommendations on good bouldering and sport climbing near or close-ish to Asheville that won’t be absolutely unbearable heat wise. I used to live there years ago when I first started climbing and have a vague memory of amazing bouldering at Grandmother mountain but nothing of the sort seems to be listed here on MP (maybe to discourage non-locals from coming?). I want to be respectful of closures etc but I don’t plan on spreading my germs inside small towns like Boone, I just wanna get on some rocks outside of town.
Rumbling bald seems like a great option but I’m not sure if the bouldering is bearable in the summer heat. Anything close to camping is a huge bonus.
Hidden Valley (sport) comes to mind. 2 hours north of Asheville. Granite City (bouldering) near Cashier's is shaded, hour and a half. Big Ivy is 30 minutes from Asheville and has some great sport options, but it will never really be a destination. Has many great camping options.
Bouldering around here is tough in the summer. The bald is super hot and chigger city right now. There is plenty of bouldering to be had around Boone. Blowing rock, grandmother, 221, and lost cove. You can also find some bearable sport climbing at the dump. But like you said, that would mean spreading your germs closer to Boone. If you’re really desperate for boulders, you could check out the north side of looking glass boulders or corner rock in big ivy. Other than that, the bald will be back in action in a couple months! :) cheers!
Looking glass boulder field is fun to go mess around in, not as developed or as much as rumbling bald but fun. Pretty shady during the day but buggy like everywhere else.
