Primitive Camping Mount Charleston zone

I was curious if there was primitive car camping spots in the Charleston area other than developed campgrounds. Interested in going to Echo Cliffs and perhaps some other zones, too, if time allows — if there’s something closer to that area, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sarah,

Going up Kyle Canyon road you'll see many dirt roads go off to either side. As its BLM land once you get west of the houses, you can drive down any of these dirt roads and find a spot for yourself. The higher in elevation the better right now with the temps. Unless folks no otherwise I don't know of anything above 7500 feet.

You could check the Harris Springs area, however there is nowhere I can think of to legally car camp in the higher elevation areas (past deer springs)  You can dispersed camp in the backcountry, but not car camp.  The number I have seen is at least 300' from a road.

please for the love of Mt Charlie resist the urge to have a campfire...

Much of the higher elevation Mt Charleston area is heavily used and fairly heavily regulated.  Because of overuse tendencies/issues, much of the camping opportunities immediately around Vegas are discouraged through active enforcement and/or regulations that preclude casual camping.  There's a lot of places in lower elevations you could park and pitch a tent [wink wink], but this time of the year that would be fairly unpleasant (stays hot well into the late evening).  Mother nature does most of the needed enforcement this time of the year.  :p

In pre-covid times, airbnb was the best option or visiting during cooler months to use the campground(s).  I'm sure there's exceptions and people doing things that are illegal.  Good luck having someone give up their local secrets.

Ironically, I was just talking to a friend about camp fires yesterday and how I find them utterly useless. I think growing up in Bishop (arid desert) has made me appreciate the lack of camp fires even more as I’ve been through some massive ones here. So, no worries. And I also don’t believe in burning my TP either (like how the recent Fins fire was started).

Near 156 and 158 there is FR 203 "Champion Rd". Lots of spots off of this road. The higher ones are just under 8k ft IIRC.
Mack's Canyon road also has a lot of spots, but I have not checked them out.

I don't know if either area is accessible at the moment as its been a while since I checked on the status of that fire.

Thank you so much!!! Hoping to come down for a weekend sometime soon.

During Covid, camping in that area is really competitive with the OHV crowd, just FYI.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
