Black Diamond makes tear gas and other lethal equipment?!! Whaaaat?
|
So my local climbing gym just dumped BD from their shelves because they also own companies that produce tear gas, rubber bullets, live ammunition and other military/defense equipment. I didn’t know this about them and thought I would share. I’m all for capitalism because you get to vote with your $$$$ based on your values. He has said he is selling one of the companies but will still hold onto other defense contracts. Climbers make up 80% of their profits, if you feel a certain way about this feel free to vote $$$$ |

This has been on the forums like 5 times since the protests started. I think the end conclusion was no one actually cares. |

There has already been two threads on this. Here's one of them: |

Thanks for this Lyle. Many of us do care and don't spend all day on MP (missing interesting & important threads)! |

Black Diamond doesn't make tear gas, a massive corporation that owns Black Diamond also owns a company that owns a company that makes tear gas and rubber bullets. Chances are basically no one at BD even knows this or is remotely affected by it in their jobs, it's not like they share an office, any employees, or (most likely) have any direct contact. |

i hope no one on this thread owns index funds or mutual funds.... I have some bad news. |

It's even further away than that. BD is owned by a company that has a board of directors. The executive board member is the CEO of a company that makes tear gas. |

You’re absolutely right, it’s a stretch and I would think anyone with a reasonable thought would be able to look at it that way. Once I read into their other holdings and their business practices I decided my money will be spent on a company that doesn’t have all that baggage. If these things don’t bother you I don’t really care, I just learned of this today, did my research and decided to share the information, have fun with it. |

Verify first, spray second. |

You yanks and your wish to sabotage your own government institutions via boycotting companies that do business with them is amazing. |

Garmin makes shock collars for dogs. Let's keep the list going. |

What’s wrong with CS gas, rubber bullets, ammunition and manufacturing military equipment? Oh yeah, NOTHING |

Cancel culture is stupid. |

Salamanizer Ski wrote: BD sells climbing gear to the Military, is there anything wrong with that? Perhaps we should be buying it all from China? I lowkey want a full rack of the BD military cams. If i recall correctly, they have a different color scheme (no color coding, all black and gray, I think.). I wonder if they ever get dumped out via surplus? |

When the owners of a company I (used to) buy from profit off of tear gassing fellow citizens I stop buying from them. BD is fucked. |

You are confused about how this works. Nobody is saying that you should disengage with all companies that you disagree with. What people do is weigh the benefits and costs of engaging with particular companies and make choices on a case by case basis. |

Key focal point is the tear gas was being used on American protesters, like a couple of weeks ago. The military was used to drive off protesters, in part with tear gas, so the fearless leader could have a photo op. That other companies make other shit for the military is utterly beside the point. Now you may not care American tear gas was used by the American military to gas American protesters on orders from the American president, so be it. And the connection to BD is tenuous, but there is a connection. I have to admit the more I think about it the less ok I am with this whole tear gas thing. |

Greg Miller wrote: ... camel back, Patagonia.. also make things for the military.. OMG! what Greg said.... Patagoniagoretex Outdoor Research Camelbak Arcteryx Wild Things Asolo Salomon Oakley BD The list goes on. All companies that make gear for those of us that wore and are currently wearing a uniform with a flag on the sleeve. I would rather this than some of the shit we had to deal with back in the 90s. Its your sons and daughters that are made safer because of it. |

Again, Black Diamond is owned by a company that is owned by a company that makes tear gas. It goes something like this... Black Diamond is owned by Clarus, which is owned by Safariland which is the company that makes and sells tear gas etc. |
