Selling my Silent Partner. It’s been used a handful of times (maybe 5) but I know have a number of great partners to climb with and don’t enjoy soloing as much. The device is in excellent condition. Price is firm. I’m happy to ship anywhere in the US. $1,100 USD, firm

this is less than you will pay on Ebay

fact check:

6 sold listings, all in the past 3 months, all cheaper than $800. 13 total less than OP's asking price in the same time period.

Take your chances then. Since May 1, the majority of listings have sold for over 1k.

I've edited my post to reflect "facts."

you also dropped your price from $1250 FIRM to $1100 FIRM - that's a minor detail to leave out in an edit. hard to pull of a cash grab when you get caught red handed.

and, just because i'm a contentious asshole, i did a quick factcheck of your rebuttal:

- 9 completed listings since may 1
- $1400 (brand new) - june 11
- $1426 (brand new) - june 11
- $700 - june 1
- $1050 - june 1
- $960 - june 1
- $1025 - may 28
- $770 - may 25
- $663.53 - may 19
- $675 - may 01

so, the majority of silent partners have sold for UNDER $1000 (4 above $1k, 5 below), and that's even counting two that are brand new, never used. the AVERAGE sale price of those 9 is $963 (including the two new guys). if you drop the new ones, which is really only fair (considering you are selling a used piece of equipment), the average sale price for a used silent partner is $834.79.

i'm not trying to bust your balls for making a buck, hell, this is a marketplace and a lot of us do that. but if you try to misrepresent real, verifiable market data, you're going to get called out on it.

I'll take it for 50 bucks. You must also provide training on how to use it improperly. Can I get it in blue instead of red?

I'll pay you $55 CAD FIRM and a 2.5% stake in my new company, where I buy up all the remaining silent partners and rent them out on a subscription basis on this forum. You can pick the trendy name, something like partner.io

Who in the hell pays $1,400 for a Silent Partner?  These things sat on the shelf for years when they were in production and retailed for $230.   I'm really curious to understand the market here?   Has there been some dramatic increase in the desire to lead-rope-solo (haven't really seen it).  Are there just that many young techies flush with cash who like to collect stuff?  Is it some weird AI-bot crawling the interwebs that determined this to be some sort of investment opportunity?    Anyone out there with first or second hand info about the sudden need to by a $1000 belay device please share!

I changed the price given credit to the data you pointed out. I listed the price as firm to not have to bother with nitwits offering $50 when the going rate is currently right at where I'm offering mine.

Your data is flawed given that you don't take into account the vintage or condition of the devices, only the sale price. My data was flawed because somehow several of those listings are not coming up when I checked.

Additional data worth mentioning is that you clearly don't have enough to do with your life if you can spend time researching the sales prices of products you aren't interested in so that you can go put up a fight on an internet forum. I'm barely motivated enough to argue with you, but I actually have a dog in the fight given that I'm the one selling the product. Confirmed, you are a "contentious asshole."

You also clearly don't understand market data. Given that the inventory of available silent partners is low, and the most current related sale prices were $1400 or more (but they were in slightly better condition), that would put the marketable value of the given inventory higher than those that were sold much lower several weeks ago.

The bottom line... I have a silent partner. I don't use it very much because I have actual partners that I prefer to climb with and I'm over the phase I went through where I wanted to solo a wall. If someone is willing to pay me what these things are currently worth, I'm happy to sell it for the price I have listed but not interested in negotiating. End of story.

i'll take it for 1,500 firm! don't try to highball me!

sorry pat, i've enjoyed climbing together but going solo is worth so much more

lol you're right, the ones you referenced were in better condition than the one you're selling. GOT 'EM.

actually i do want a silent partner, so i definitely have a dog in the fight here. i'd give you the average ebay price for a used SP ($833), minus the 9% in ebay and paypal transaction fees, which puts you at $725 net to you. add in $10 shipping and we're looking at $735 F&F or Venmo? see, that would actually be fair.

and again, i'm only busting your balls here because you tried to treat this like eBay, which it is NOT. this is a community, which also has a gear swap. if you think of this more as a loose collective of climbers and less of a place where you can offset the bloodbath that your 401k has taken in the past two days, you'll likely do better around here. sure, making a buck is cool, but making inaccurate comps to ebay isn't so much.

anyway, good luck man, climb safe!

i have a silent partner i'd be willing to let go for 500$. His name is greg but he can't speak ever since the blender accident. He can belay with ATC and grigri (more if you teach him) and will be content as long as he's fed and has a place to sleep. split shipping.

Yeah, well, that's just like...your opinion, man.

If it doesn't sell here, I can always post it to ebay and if you want to fight the bidders for it you can pay $1400 since that's what the last two went for. I posted here at a price that was better than the last two, then dropped the price given some consideration to your original post. If I'm going to bother further, I'll just put it on there. Even if it's just to spite you personally for lacking tact.

interested, is he potty trained? or is this a "newspaper in the corner" type situation. fine with either, just making sure i have the right expectations going into this.

He's not only potty trained but he's even big-wall potty trained. Get him while you can! He tends to use a lot of toilet paper however which is quite an expensive commodity so keep an eye on him.

update - chatted with the seller and he seems like a cool dude. online forums kinda suck, but FWIW, nate seems legit and he's trying to offer his silent partner at fair market value. sorry for the drama :)

Quit forcing that crabby guy to buy your silent partner

I think NateC is on point with his pricing. Consider: He is moving away from needing a machine to belay him (he has more partners now). Thus, he can still climb whether or not he sells his Silent Partner. On the other hand, based on all his unsolicited and petty arguments on Nate's thread, it appears Thomas G. is moving away from having positive human interactions. At this rate, it won't be long before only a Silent Partner will be able to tolerate him and thus, the value of the Silent Partner to Thomas will undoubtedly be much higher than his original research and estimates would suggest.

Thanks, Thomas. And thanks for the offline conversation. The feeling is mutual, you seem like a good guy and it takes maturity and decency to offer to have a real conversation away from the shit slinging of online forums.

nate has a freestanding beer offer on my tab. or a free catch. or both, so long as he can drink the beer while leading (might be where the silent partner comes in handy?)

no judgment if you're mormon either, i'll hook you up with some kickass rootbeer.
