Ganglion Cyst on the middle finger joint

Has anyone ever experienced Ganglion Cyst on palm of hand? I have this hard lump on the palm of hand middle finger where the joint is. I have mobility and strength to use my middle finger, but when i touch or push on the cyst, there's discomfort/pain. I don't really feel it unless i put pressure on the spot or i'm rubbing my hand and feel it almost like "shifting".
Wanted to see if anyone has had this problem. What was your experience? Did it go away with time? Do i need to address it/have it removed? I've noticed this for about 5-6 weeks now.

I had one in my wrist pushing against a nerve that hurt for years. Smacked it with a hard back book about 8 years ago and it’s been good ever since. Think it’s called the “bible method”

A.K.A: Bible cyst! Apparently you wack it with a bible and the demons come out. Cuz yours looks a little stigmata-ish. Or stop holding on so hard..is what people have told me. It’s just the joint fluid nastily displaced. I’ve had a few similar to yours, where my pinky meets my palm and currently, my middle knuckle looks like it’s gonna give birth to another knuckle.
The one on my palm did go away without me taking a break, and my knuckle baby has been severely reduced thanks to luck, dumb luck and consistent taping. It hasn’t affected my grip strength either. I can’t imagine it’s healthy to ignore though. Nothing I said was perhaps helpful, but know you aren’t alone in your deformities.

I had something similar in my the palm of my hand. I had it removed and it came back "foreign object" on the test results. Never found out what but guessing metal splinter. I remember people saying oh its a cyst, then I remember the guy who cut it out saying no cysts don't grow on your palm. All I know is I'm glad I had it removed and all in all was not bad. Odd place to have stitches but it never came back and no issues since

Sounds like dupuytren’s contracture. Google it.

FWIW, I have a bump on my hand that looks exactly like the one in Rob's second photo. I went to a hand surgeon who said it's Dupuytren's Disease. It basically doesn't affect climbing for me, there is no pain and the lump certainly hasn't gotten worse. But some people with severe cases can't open their hands all the way and need surgery.

I feel my hard bump right here. I assume this might be more Ganglion Cyst? Is this an odd spot to have it? If i want to have it go away on its own should i be resting the finger straight or curled? should it be wrapped/clamped?

Yeah, that’s not your palm and so probably not Dupuytren’s contracture. You had described it as being on your palm.

Please don’t smack your ganglion cyst with a bible

It may be a mucous cyst of the joint. The joints produce their own lubrication in the form of mucus, which can form a cyst sometimes. I aspirated one on my index finger that would come back until it stopped. Flipperbaby, sterilize a sewing needle and pierce that cyst. You'll find the fluid inside is similar to KY jelly in that it is viscous and clear. Keep doing it until it stops growing back.

uh- yeah- the bible method is not a great idea. If it's not too bothersome best to just leave it alone. If it's impairing function or painful its best to have a doctor remove it.  I have a ganglion cyst that has been growing below my ankle for some time . At the moment it doesn't really interfere with anything so I've been ignoring it.

Better to grab a Torah

but yeah, wrap it up and take some time off climbing if it’s bothering you

I have a lump in almost the same spot on my right hand currently.  I've described it as feeling as if I had a bb embedded in my finger.  Mine aren't painful but they are a nuisance.  I managed to pop it several month ago which was a really strange feeling as if I could feel the fluid in the sac spreading through my finger under the skin.  It has since returned.  I've had these lumps in other fingers over the last 10 years and have never been to the doctor to have them addressed.  Good to know I'm not alone in this.  I'd be interested in hearing what a doctor has recommended.

I had sinuvitis on several fingers followed by a cyst that formed on middle finger knuckle.

I couldn’t get myself to wack it with a book but did try to put consistent pressure on it to no avail

I went to see Natasha Barnes and was put on a hang board protocol. I also took collagen (the type for joints) and used the wave tool. Not sure if it was one or all but the cyst and sinuvitis went away.

Just had surgery to remove one from the back of my hand. I'll let you know how it goes.

I also have this, and also in the lowest joint in my middle finger on my right hand. This article seems to describe exactly what I am feeling and what you and OP are describing.

"Volar retinacular cysts are tender masses (ganglion cysts) that typically present near the base of the finger on the palm side (volar), and, although benign, can cause pain, especially when gripping an object. Volar retinacular cysts may also be called flexor tendon sheath ganglions, as they arise from the tissue surrounding the tendon sheath of the finger (first annular, A1, pulley)."

"Volar retinacular cysts most commonly affect the middle finger, followed by the index finger, ring finger, little finger, and lastly, the thumb."

A few years ago I injured myself from over-climbing with symptoms congruent with a strain of the A1 pulley, so it makes sense that this may contribute to a herniating cyst in the same place. Mine is so small and firm that I would have been suspicious that it was fluid-filled, but you managed to pop yours and it feels like a bb, then I guess mine fits the bill.

I have a ganglion on the back of my hand near my wrist and it gets big enough to rub on my tendons sometimes. Mine is rock hard and I have smashed it several times. It usually grows back but this last time it seems to have chilled out a little bit. I read somewhere that they can be from weak tendons/ligaments in the area so I tried doing some exercises targeting the ones around my problem area. Idk if it actually worked or if it just happened to get smashed good enough the last time.

I wouldn't be enthused about this as a DIY project. Most often you'll get away with it, but the cyst does communicate with the tendon sheath and joint. Get it infected, and "disaster" is a fair description. Those photos you've seen on this forum of degloving injuries? The flaying we have to do to manage that infection is about that graphic. Draining the cyst of its clear jelly contents is the best conservative strategy; 80% will resolve with up to 5 cycles. (Skip the steroid injection; recent research indicates it contributes nothing.) If it doesn't resolve by #5, it's not likely going to short of surgery (and can return even then). If you're trained in sterile technique, and using povidone-iodine or chlorhexidine gluconate prep solution, you might do it... but I do it for a living, and even I don't do it myself, I have a colleague do it for me. (I've had three of them.)

Had one surgically removed of my pinky A2 region 2 years ago. Now having another removed off my ring finger A2 region in Dec. Hopefully goes as well as my first surgery. Full recovery in about 4-6 weeks, but was definitely able to climb before that.

I’ve had my on side of my index finger for some time now it’s just a small medium sized lump I thought it was a weird wart or sum but it’s not it’s just a hard bump. And I can move it up and down side 2 side no pain when I squeeze it kinda hurts for sec but after pressing hard as I can but when I do all it does is just move down and comes back to its normal spot. I kinda wanna know if I can pop it or cut it or something but at this point it kinda feels like some weird wart of abnormal bone or something. Can anyone tell me more info?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
