Pickup truck camper builds
|
Trying to get inspired to build a camper shell type thing for my tacoma. Something removable that I can take off when I'm using the truck for work . Just looking for ideas and inspiration. Show me what you got! |

Build a camper shell, like a truck topper? If you are hyped on the idea of building one instead of buying one, go for it .but anything you build is going to be very heavy and thus hard to remove. Also if you build the topper right/last longer than 3 months, Its going to get expensive quick compared to buying a older used topper on craisglist. Look into boat building materials and techniques if you are going that route. |

Then Sold that one as it needed to be refurbished and I don’t have the shop space anymore. Build it like a strip canoe; thin fiberglass mat, West Systems and good varnish. Read lots of boat forums... Now, |

Thanks gents,... nice looking stuff! yeah I'm a carpenter by trade and done some boat work too. I think I could make something pretty light. I'm really thinking about something that would install with the tailgate down, or extend over the cab slightly, to give a little more leg room.... but still be fairly aerodynamic. Just looking for ideas, and to see the beautiful work others have come up with. |

My man chad does impressive work: |

There's a guy in Alaska with a good YouTube of his build . F350 7.3 diesel 8ft bed. Full build with solar , kitchen , wood stove, pooper etc.. really cool build. |

Well if your a carpenter and a boat builder then your way beyond my skill level but here's what I came up with. Another finish coat option is elastomeric paint, it's held up well and performed excellent for me for 2 years. Also keeps the heat down a ton in the summer. Easy to apply and relatively cheap |

Rooftop tent ? |

This guy has a pretty cool build. I like that the back door slides out over the tailgate when camping to create room. Not very stealthy, but its sweet. |

If you want removable then check out a softopper. Super light and really quick to fold down or take off completely. Pair that with whatever bed/shelving you want to build in the back. I got a used softopper for $400 when most used hardshells were triple that. I don't have a place to put a hardshell if I want it off, but the softopper can fit in a closet. |

KeithS wrote: Nice, Keith! I was just reading about the Topper EZ Lift. I see that your fabric lays over the outside of the bed- a nice improvement to shed water over the EZ Lift tent options that sit inside the bed. Did you use their lift kit or make your own? |

Keep the build pictures coming! I may go this route in the next two months. |
