In my backyard, we have a 1 room disconnected office building, and we have been considering the idea of building a climbing wall on the outside of it. I have never built a climbing wall before, but I have a pretty good sense of what needs to be done. My plan so far has been to screw 2x4's into the studs of the wall, and then screw plywood with t-bolts into those 2x4's. I was also planning on setting the 2x4's into cement on the ground so there is not as much stress on the wall of the building. It's about a 20 foot tall wall, and is also in direct sunlight, and can get hot during summer. I am not planning on any overhangs, Just a vertical wall. Does anybody know anything about building outdoor climbing walls on the sides of buildings? Will the sunlight damage the holds?
Thanks.
Edit: Also, if anybody knows of any good climbing holds for outdoor use I would love to know the brand/model. Think UV and rain protection.
You probably want to add a little roof to shelter the wall. The UV exposure may affect the holds given enough exposure, but I’d be more concerned about the plywood and moisture exposure tbh.
Ok Thanks. I was also thinking of a way that I could take off the plywood during the winter, as well as treating the plywood to be more weather resistant, or like brian mentioned above, a tarp cover.
