Those old BIG leather boots?

rob bauer · · Golden, CO · Joined Dec 2004 · Points: 3,954

Nobody mentioned the Galibier Peuterey.  Super Guide was too narrow, so Gary Neptune sold me these, 1980?

I ice climbed in these all through most of the plastic boot era.  (Size 9, 5#, 10oz, in case you're interested.)

(Wore Wild Things Savage Gear gaiters over these instead of Super Gaiters; no hooks necessary.)

And then my brother unloaded his hiking boots on me, which I took by mistake once and used for ice many more years.

Fabiano Extra.  Size 10, 6#, 2oz.

Not the same vintage as the Super Guides, but I was climbing in these big leather boots well into the early 2000's.  These boots fit my feet so well, that they still get used on shorter days when weight is not an issue.

Scarpa Assault:

Raichle Mont Blanc

(Love the dual lacing on these.)

Here are some big leather boots (Raichle Eigers) on the approach to the Direct Exum ridge.  (I was not smart enough to know that rock shoes would be more appropriate footwear for a route like this one.  I figured it was an alpine climb, so I better wear big boots.)

I don't remember Wild Things making any gaiters; are you sure it wasn't Wild Country or Wildline aka Savage Gear?

I wanna say those Scarpas were the Annapurnas; beasts and bombproof

I've been eyeing these for a while now. How do the sizes etc. compare with "modern" docs, i.e. would I have to go half a size up/down or just order the same size and enjoy better craftsmanship routerlogin.uno/  ?

I think those Fabianos were called the Mountain Master.  I remember them for sale for $65 in the 70s.  Not needing a 3/4 shank boot for backpacking in the Southeast, I went with a lesser model.  I sure wanted to need them though.  I remember the Peuterey--billed as a better boot for rock climbing than the Super Guide.

EMS sold them. They were also my first dedicated rock shoe; prior to buying these we all climbed in our heavy Vasque backpacking boots. With their full-length steel shank, climbing in the Fabianos weren't much different that the backpacking boots. Climbing Adirondack friction slabs in them was a real challenge.  As so many people still do, I bought them too tight, and quickly passed them along to a friend once I got into EBs.

Pretty much my story, too. EBs were like magic after what came before.

P.S. I haven’t been able to come across a photo of Black Beauties on the internet. Maybe I’m just search incompetent???

You're so right: Savage Gear with the 5.10 rubber rand. (I'll edit my original post.)

rob bauer, if I haven't yet mentioned the Galibier Georges Payot Peuterey it's because unfortunately, to this day, I still haven't found them  . I even contacted the legendary alpinist Georges Payot, technical adviser at the time.

I hiked many a mile in the Galibier Vercors.  Ah, the times of 5 pound hiking boots (and youth)!  They were comfortable, though.

Love seeing those Galibier catalogues from 1966 and 1972.  Any chance of accessing them as high resolution files for printing?

After wearing out my Vercors on trails and my Super Guides in the mountains of the Canadian Rockies, I wore them till they were totally broken down on the farm and at the feedlot.

Send me a PM and I wil send you a rather good pdf of these two catalogs. In fact, they were photographied on a table by a friend with a mobile in Georges Payot' kitchen. It is not really professional work

My old Mountaineering kit, ca 1979-1982.

I had old Raichle boots, Chouinard Frost ice axe, Salewa screws, and a variety of Biners.

I used full boot covering, wool-lined gaiters with my Galibier Super Guides in the 1970s and 80s.  I don't recall who made these.  Can anyone help me out by identifying these (see attached photos).  Wondering if there might still be a description of these gaiters by the manufacterer.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
