Where to camp at New River Gorge?

I am trying to go on a four day trip to the New for my first time and it seems like every camping area is closed within the vicinity until later in spring. The problem is that next week is my spring break so I must go now or wait until it’s buggy and hot as shit. Any suggestions? (I am camping in a van but need a place to build a fire for cooking)

Have you check other forum posts about the camping?  This question comes up every few months.  I assume you've looked into Rays Campground and the AAC?

The AAC is open, its only $5 a night in the winter months but you do have to pay with cash and put it in the drop box. The only downside is that the bathhouse is closed but there is an outhouse on site, at least there was a week ago. The sinks outside are still on as well. They also have firewood next to the communal fire pits so its very nice in the winter actually.

No clue.  Rays was my go to but I moved away a few years back.

AAC campground is cash only right now but still lots of activity there.  You can also camp for free near Summersville Dam, this will keep you closer to climbing at the lake but quite a bit further from Fayetteville.  Depends on what you're trying to climb.

What about Chestnut Creek campground? Or Rogers over at Kaymoor? Guessing those campgrounds are still in business.

I am fairly certain Rogers closed a number of years ago, hopefully I am wrong though!

If it's your spring break, you should definitely go to the Red. The New is a total choss pile. Tell your friends. Also Roger hasn't been hosting campers for like... 8 years now.
