Let’s hear some opinions on climbing log apps. Looking for something better than the MP app.

While I log most of my ascents here I also keep a very detailed spreadsheet on Google Sheets where I keep track of days/pitches/feet climbed, amongst other things (such as how i feel each day, etc..) Way more useful than MP imo as it allows me to have different sheets for different styles of climbing, as well as keep lists of goals and other useful stuff.

MyClimb is great for logging climbs, it doesn't have maps/crag info though.

I like that MP is linked to the route database, but I’d like something that would help me keep track of route pyramids and more graphically lay out my ticks.

I’m with you, and I don’t think it exists. MP system could be so much better with a few small additions/modifications!

but I’m guessing not enough people care to make it worthwhile.

Well in that case maybe 8a.nu is for you! Their graphics are awesome, I’d recommend giving it a shot.

In my case it’s more like 8(/2)a.nu but I’ll check it out.

The best is to build your own. Since 1985, I've kept a climbing diary in a database. Currently, I use Microsoft Access tailored to just what I want. One nice feature is being able to easily search it for climbs I did some time  ago and for anything else such as partners, location etc. . Also, I have a note section for each climb where I can make comments about the events of the day when I climbed the route, which is often interesting to see years later. Sometimes this includes critical comments about my partners but more often about myself.

I've done over 300 routes at Joshua Tree, and the database is useful to consult as I look for new routes to climb.

Here are the graphs they create for you, tracking points (10 hardest routes and their difficulty) per year and overall, as well as flashes/rps/trs at each grade.

Can you toggle this to YDS?

Check out sendage, its big in Canada and most of its US entries are pretty comprehensive as well. Better than MP for most sport and bouldering areas anyway, and an infinitely more user friendly site than 8a.

Do you have any examples of what you're looking for? How would you like to see the ticks displayed?

I just make an excel spreadsheet for that

A spreadsheet is fine—and in theory anything one can do in a database can be done in a spreadsheet. However, if one has many different categories, a database is easier to use and has more robust search features—useful after collecting a few years of data. The downside is that everyone is familiar with spreadsheets but not with databases such as Access.
