Would a 7.9mm rope work with the Petzl micro traxion? Technically the manufacturer says 8.0-11 but was wondering if anyone has tried with 7.9...

By "work" which one do you mean:

1) It will perform up to the rated standards/forces listed in the product handout (probably pretty close, but I expect the sheath of the rope to shred easier than with a larger rope)

2) It will catch a human life and keep you from dying like it does with an 8.0mm rope (yeah, you won't die if you're using it under normal, sane circumstances)

3) It will work properly as a progress capture pulley when pulling up a load of gear (yes, definitely, I've gotten a 5mm cord to work in that scenario)

Why would you use a thinner rope than what a device is rated for? Buy a thicker rope.

I use mine for rope solo, but I use a 10mm semi-static line or a Beal Karma 9.8. It works great with those ropes.

I got a good sized tear in the sheath on a 8.5 FWIW. Smallest I go now is 9.2 but if I'm TR soloing I just use a 9.9 or 10mm static

For hauling or other, it's totally acceptable

OP never stated what it was used for before people keep jumping on the thicker rope for TR solo bandwagon.

.... I'll say my Beal Karma 9.8mm  is skinnier than my Infinity 9.5mm...  Just because it says 8.0 minimum doesn't mean a fat 7.9 won't work. But on the same thought a skinny 8mm may not work as advertised even if it meets micro tax minimum stated rope thickness.. use your best judgment. YgD

It will grab 5mm, the sheath will break at much lower loads but it will grab .

True, but I doubt he is going to be using a 7.9 to haul with...

Unless he's hauling someone out of a crevasse.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
