Back in the spring of 2011 I had the pleasure of shooting with Lonnie Kauk for a few days all over the Eastern Sierras. The video was an athlete profile commissioned by now defunct Dead Point Magazine. My buddy Damon Corso hooked up the gig for me to accompany his feature article and photo spread. The premise of both projects was to highlight what a badass, dual sport athlete Lonnie is. At the time he was a professional snowboarder during the winter and a professional rock climber the rest of the year. His style in both disciplines is marked by incredible poise and an innate ability to just go big, wether that be on a massive jump or committing free solo. No doubt some of this had to be inherited from his father, legendary Stonemaster Ron Kauk, though he also credits John Bachar for teaching him the mental game of soloing. In addition to being an incredible athlete, Lonnie is also a hell of a nice guy and I'm thankful for the time I got to spend with him. He has a completely unique vibe which I think still comes across on his IG page and I highly recommend you check him out. The full video is now available on the Giant Rock YouTube channel, link in bio.
