Castle Rock Access in Wisconsin

I will be visiting Wisconsin in a week and am curious where you can park to access Castle Rock in Grant County from County Highway Q.  I did not see a good spot to park on Google Earth.  I will be scrambling to the summit (will not have gear) if possible or just hike to the base if it is class 5 or higher.  Thanks.

You mean the fishin' crag? On the shoulder of the road was standard in my day.

Park on road shoulder right near the bridge and walk up.

With the snow cover on that steep slope, it should be a challenging scramble.

I gave the property owner that has the fenced-in driveway off the road $10 bucks and he let me park inside the gate.

  • I may end up parking at the western unit of the Snow Bottom SNA if there is a pullout since it is not far away.  With the recent snowfall I might not be able to park at the bridge.

I ended up stopping just short of the summit.  The 10' dropoff was snow-covered with no handholds.  Unless I somehow missed an easier route I would suspect that Castle Rock is a challenging class 4 or low class 5 via its easiest route.

When the ground is not frozen I'd call it 3rd class.  The local kids party up there in the warm months - sadly, at least one has fallen off, and others have vandalized the rock.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
