Yosemite in March?

What are your thoughts on attempting el cap in late march? I haven't had the chance to climb in the valley during that part of the year... Is it likely to be too wet and rainy? Too cold? Just curious if anyone has been climbing in the valley during that time and could educate me a bit on typical conditions....

I'd lean towards too wet depending on what you're wanting to do up there. Even if it was dry at the time, I'd expect wet cracks and the like. Probably would've been good during some of those epic drought winters in years passed, but even the most recent dry winter (17/18) saw a ton of snow in March. I did have some good Valley weekends in early to mid-April this spring, but making valley plans, especially on El Cap, in march seems like a crap shoot at best.

I have done El Cap a couple of times on my partner's Spring Break from college:
- 3/1988 - Never Never Land
- 4/1987 - The Shield
- 4/1997 - Horse Chute - different partner, not in college :-)

Never Never Land was fine.
The Shield was colder than I expected, due to updrafts.
It was helpful to have a sleeping pad between the portaledge and my down sleeping bag.
And it was good to have another layer of clothes during the day.
Horse Chute had one ugly pitch with wet mud in the crack.
We were also concerned it might rain on us on the last day, in a corner where it could focus drainage.

Basically in March it is more likely to rain on you.
April is still slightly early, but more stable.
May is ideal.

Generally things dry out fairly fast on El Cap except for a few pitches that drain,
like the Jungle/Sewer Pitch on the Salathe' below The Block,
and the pitch above Camp 6 on the Nose (which drips onto Camp 6).
If you are over by Zodiac, you can be hit by water from Horsetail Falls if it's windy.

Note:  I live in CA, so I can just postpone a climb if the 5-6 day weather forecast is not great.
Planning a trip from another state in advance might require better weather in general if your plans are not flexible.

If this next march is any thing like last year,  be prepared for lots of rain.

Just wanted to bump this thread, cause the Valley has been prime! Obviously we can't predict the future, but if March is anything like February, it will be very, very dry.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
