My husband and I have long enjoyed taking a sunday drive to Wolverine to escape the city. I have always loved the beautiful limestone and granite back there. Now that we climb, we are wondering why there hasn't been more routes put up. There's RPM wall, and some stuff in Blackfoot river canyon, but with the amount of rock back there it's a meager selection.... Anyone else wondering, or have some answers?

Haven't been up to RPM but I imagine some of the approaches into the basalt canyon would be pretty rough.

I didn't think Crank Cave was worth the shwack.  Also, there was a boulder that looked like it used to be an anchor lying at the base of one of the climbs.

Yea I dont really think it would be worth it to put up more routes on the basalt, I'm more thinking about the limestone that's in wolverine canyon. There's plenty of bolted basalt in east Idaho. I agree, the approach to blackfoot canyon is sketchy....

Wolverine canyon is the top of a basin and range mountain, the hills you drive up getting to it are all basalt from the north American hotspot ie. Yellowstone. It's a little odd, but it's like the mountain is peaking out of the basalt haha.

Was just at Crank cave last weekend on Saturday 11/9. Yes, i'm unsure of the route name but one is now missing a bolt due to the rockfall.
I have not climbed at RPM wall, but from discussion with locals here in Idaho Falls, the limestone out there is very chossy and not great rock for climbing. I'm sure with more exploring, there is a possibility of finding something good, but access and approach might hinder the experience.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
