Gym closing for a week for comp.? Is it legal?

My climbing gym shut down for a week to setup route  for a comp. I pay for a monthly membership and this basically means I don't get to use the gym 25% of this month. Is this legal for gym to do without recompensing monthly members for week? The comp. is 1-day long and is open to the public but costs as much as a monthly membership.

It’s a private business, they can do whatever they want. I’m sure in the fine print of your membership agreement you signed saying it was ok.

Shutting down for a week seems a bit extreme though. Got talk to them and express your point. Worst they can say is “oh well”.

Yes.

It's definitely legal but I know some gyms let you 'suspend' your membership to save money for periods of time you know you won't be there. I recently had several surgeries so I had to do this for a few months. If you really care about getting your money back for that week you could ask about it.

FWIW when our gym was recently used for a comp it was actually very well done. The gym was open except for the finials. The rest of the time some of the main climbing walls were closed and members could watch the preliminaries for free. I was bouldering during part of them. What I got out of it is that there are some pretty talented climbers of plastic that like to do dyno's to big holds. Not sure how they would do on thin crimps.

As for the OP, and as said above read your contract. It is perfectly legal for the gym to close but there could be a breach in the contact. The contract may or may not have a specific process for a remedy. Either way,  it is  up to you to seek compensation for the comp (pun intended).

You could always ask management at the gym instead of asking MP.

I suggest you mention the specific gym until the managers get trolled out and hilarity ensues:

His response was to fight it with the only weapons at hand—passive resistance and open displays of contempt.

The way the gym smells....  Maybe this is illegal too?

That is because people are wearing their shoes in the restroom.

Don't worry, they would do just fine on thin crimps.

Just ask for a pro-rated discount for next month, ie -25% (1 out of 4 weeks that you didnt climb).

But maybe you should just enter the competition and have fun?

It's a customer service issue, not a legal one. Suggest you talk to the gym management. Bet they'll comp you some guest passes or pro-rate your month or something. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
