Thumb Extensor Issues

Has anybody dealt with these at all? This spring I thought I was experiencing early onset thumb arthritis, but further googling and thought has me wondering if maybe I strained the extensor in my thumb. Obviously I should seek professional help, but right now I’m mostly curious if anyone has experience with this mode of injury? I’ve nebver heard of it and right now feel like I can climb around it, (doing so more or less worked this spring) but would love to hear cautionary tales now if they’re out there.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with thumbs. You did not give enough information on your problem. At different times I have had serious problems with both of my thumbs. Although I have been told I need surgery on my thumbs and at least three fingers. PT and time have fixed most of my problems. I'll never play Guitar or Piano again, but I can climb.

Yeah, I wasn't looking for a diagnosis.  Mostly trying to find people that have had issues with the extensors in their thumbs and hear their stories.  What sorts of things have you had go wrong?

i recently broke a piece of bone along with the extensor tendon off of my middle finger.  I had to splint it for 8 weeks 24/7 and then wear a splint for another 4 or so at night.  My issue was pretty bad and I am back to climbing though the middle finger still hurts. You still have an attached tendon assuming your thumb works so you probably just need to rest or do a little rehab/strengthening. Rice bucket and the metolius squeeze balls help extensors in my experience. I have somewhat severely damaged multiple extensors in my hands, but never the thumb and have always got them back to feeling mostly normal.

I have managed to damage extensors & flexors on my left thumb & flexors on on my right thumb. I also have at different times pulled flexors on both right fingers & my right middle finger. Lots of X-rays & MRI's. Last year my left Thumb blew up, I had zero use of my Thumb. I was told without surgery I would never have use of it again. After three month of PT & another couple of months of me working with it it started to get better and now it's as good as ever. There is a good chance I could have prevented my last Thumb issues had I been doing preventive exercises or movements ahead of the injury.

Have you considered DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis?
