How To Cut Your Rope

Best way trim the ends off your climbing rope. Let's hear how you do it.

  1. Tape the place you want to cut your rope and then cut through the tape. Melt ends with lighter.
  2. Heat a knife over flame until red hot and cut through the rope.
  3. Make a cut and then melt the ends while squishing the core into the sheath giving you an end with no core exposed.
  4. Take it to Neptunes and have them do it.

Get it done with an actual hot knife (the rope cutting tool, not a knife that is hot). The other options work but I don't think they come out as well, so if it's an option use the tool made for the job.

  1. Take rope into kitchen
  2. Cut rope with kitchen knife
  3. Turn on gas range top
  4. Melt rope end with the gas flame
  5. Roll end of rope against the metal stove top until cool
  6. Melt tip just a little bit again
  7. Press tip onto metal stove top to cool
  8. Explain to partner why there's rope bits on the kitchen floor and melted rope left behind on the stovetop
  9. Be happy you're used to bivvying on the ground because that makes the couch feel more comfy.

If you don't want to spend the money on a hot knife, you can take your rope to the local home depot or lowes, and they will cut it with their hot knife for free.

For thinner cordage: I've had success pre-melting the cord a little bit before I cut it. It makes future you love you as well, since the other end of your bulk cord is pre-prepped.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
