Will the sportiva Akashas hold up as a moderate approach / scrambling shoe even without the vibram soles?

The La Sportiva Akasha is an awesome and comfortable shoe, but size them tight if you're going to do any scrambling or easy 5th class.

They are a great (for me) light hiker and trail runner. But the sole is fat and doesn't inspire any confidence when it comes to edging. The sole is grippy enough to friction up slabs, even without being a brand name compound. But some of the lugs are plastic-y and tend to slide alarmingly on wet/greasy surfaces. Overall I wouldn't give them high marks as a scrambling/approach shoe.

I would say no. They have practically zero edging ability and they also slip around a lot when compared to TX3s. If you are only going to be hiking though, I think they are fine.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
